Great question. Mars lost its dynamo-driven magnetic field ~4B years ago, so solar wind strips atmosphere slowly today (~100g/s per MAVEN data). Terraforming proposals include a magnetic shield satellite at the Mars-Sun L1 Lagrange point (NASA 2017 concept, modeled to inflate a protective magnetotail) or superconducting rings—feasible in principle per recent papers. Lower gravity (0.38g) means a thinner surface atmosphere for the same mass (needs ~2.6x column density for Earth pressure), but heavier gases (CO2/N2/O2) are retained well over millennia. With shield + replenishment from poles/comets, it's manageable for habitability. Challenges remain huge, but physics doesn't forbid it.
