We want to know who you are and what you do! What sports do you officiate? What levels do you officiate? Where do you officiate?

Absolutely amazes me that more. Officials don’t emulate what they see their professional peers do on TV. Athletes do it. Coaches do it. Our pro peers are on TV for a reason. We should want our mechanics and hustle to match theirs.

Dear schools and ADs. If you can make one thing happen for your officials when they arrive, please make it secure parking close to the building. While we’re very appreciative of water and food, the most lacking accommodation is officials parking.

@00_bvance @KingJames Going to be honest. Have no idea what the play is. I assume in the WNBA game. I don’t disagree to let the players play and we shouldn’t dictate the outcome, but when do we pass? Agree, too many of us are afraid to admit when we’ve made a mistake. Ego is powerful.

I’m sorry but that wasn’t a foul! Let the damn players dictate the outcome of a close battled tested game. 🤦🏾‍♂️

@wnyua Should a coach/parent get aggressive in a manner like this, I’ll go multiple games. Depending on the severity, could go remainder of the season as well.

@wnyua I’m the sportsmanship committee chair for a large league where I’m at and when we get a report (usually negative), I confirm the report with umpires, staff and coaches involved. If checks out, I suspend offending parties. For example, an ejection, but leaves immediately, 1 game.

We had two umpires followed to their cars and verbally abused and threaten after a 15U game last night. The behavior is completely unacceptable. This is one of the biggest reasons we lose umpires and are not able to meet the demand for umpires.

I worked the KS 6A HS baseball tournament the last two days and during a semifinal game at the fish, I noticed something worth mentioning. Between innings, a backup catcher came out to warm up the pitcher. Pretty common practice and very appreciated as it keeps the game

@varsityblue56 High school coaches taking NFHS exam would be around 25% pass. Travel coaches who play most tourneys under FED rules taking exam would be around 8-10% pass. Thats with some study. Taking it cold on game day w/o warning numbers would much much lower

Rewording this question: NEED HONEST ANSWERS COACHES What % of HIGH SCHOOL coaches would pass the same rules test umpires have to take? How about the required 85%, if you want to call postseason? Now let’s take that to TRAVEL coaches? What % of those coaches would pass the Federation (high school baseball rules- aka FED) test? Genuinely interested to hear this… Even more interested in getting a few hundred coaches across the country to take the test for me so I can see actual results
Brock Hudgens@brockhudg

What % of travel ball coaches would pass a test regarding their sports IQ? Example: Runner on second base and fly ball to right field, who is the cut off to third?

Story on the latest sign of youth sports culture: Our 10U baseball team played a game yesterday. Opposing parents chirping at our 3rd base coach. Opposing parents yelling at umpires after calls that don’t go their way, adding “it’s us vs the umps!” Opposing player gets plunked with a baseball in the back while stealing second, is on the ground in obvious pain, and his own coaches/parents are screaming at him to get up and toughen up. Nobody went out to check on him. Opposing tough-guy coaches arguing calls non-stop. Screaming at their own players for not listening to instruction. After the game (a loss for them), those coaches spent 10 minutes arguing with the umpires & tournament organizer while their own players waited patiently in the outfield for the postgame meeting. That meeting included forcing them to run a lap after a long day of baseball (they’d played a doubleheader). As our team/families drove away from the fields, their team was still in the dugout, as the head coach laid into them for their performance. This is 10U travel baseball. This is youth sports. You wonder why kids burn out from the game or turn out to be bad adults. The cycle feeds itself. The youth sports culture needs good people to stand in the gap, and stand up for the kids. Each weekend is a wake-up call to just how bad it has gotten, and it’s only getting worse.

@BigStive765 @GottliebShow Doug, we have some fantastic high school clinics coming up this summer in the KC area. Come on out. I’ll get ya a hotel room, whistle and some stripes. Bring your black shorts and black shoes and let’s get you going. It’ll change the way you watch the game for sure.

“Yep.” “He needs to work on his strike zone.” “Oh? How so?” “The corners. His strike zone on the corners.” “Oh really? You could see missed pitches on the corners from all the way down here?” “Well, I mean, ya…” 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

Evaluated at an umpire clinic yesterday with live scrimmages. Standing down 1st base line against the fence, talking w/ umpires, a dad approached (who’d been standing beyond 1st base dugout the entire scrimmage. “You working with the umpire who was behind the plate?”

Effective sports officials training (Youth in particular) MUST include in-game instruction and critique. How do you provide in-game instruction? Ear piece & radio? Being on-court/field with the official? How would you prefer to receive in-game instruction & critique?

Let’s eff the baseball Twitter machine up! What’s the ruling? And no, Do-over is never going to be an acceptable ruling as you are supposed to try to escape the situation WITHOUT ejecting any coaches…… Credit: photo not mine
