The Lifeboat, Eric Ravilious, 1938. Painted at Aldeburgh in #Suffolk it features a lifeboat named the Abdy Beauclerk, which in #WW2 took part in the #Dunkirk evacuation. The original artwork is in the collection of the @TownerGallery.

'A Sunny Day.' (1900) Elin Danielson's favourite subjects tend to be portraits of women engaged in daily work. Given the date of this picture, it was most likely painted in Livorno in Italy shortly after her marriage to the painter Raffaello Gambogi.

#ElizabethGoudge Elizabeth Goudge: Died on 1st April 1984. I missed her yesterday. The Little White Horse is one of my favourite childhood books. A big favourite of J. K. Rowling's too, apparently.

A Maundy scene in an Anglo-Saxon manuscript: monks washing feet and a king giving to the poor. Maundy Thursday takes its medieval name from these acts of charity, following Christ's commandment at the Last Supper. His 'mandatum' became 'mandé' in French, 'maundy' in English.

Stanley Spencer recorded in his 1938 Desk Diary that he began 'Magnolias,' in March of that year. On 5th April 1938, he wrote to his dealer Dudley Tooth saying that the painting was 'as good as anything I have done.'

In 1938, Evelyn Dunbar was commissioned by Country Life magazine to produce drawings (and later oils) for its Gardener’s Diary and made witty personifications of each month. The month of April sees a figure wearing a striped smock, holding a coldframe with a cuckoo in her hat.

New find! And how lovely it is. This small, silver thimble was found in the field next to Gwydir. We think it’s Tudor. When I hold it, it gives me goosebumps - a direct link to the woman who lost it. Very kindly donated by Margaret Bassett, the woman who found it.
