Let me start by saying everyone is outraged because they think that the police officer didn’t believe the man was paralyzed. That is not accurate. Watch the whole video. The vehicle was stopped for an equipment violation. The officers appeared to be cordial. It sounds like the driver didn’t have a drivers license or insurance on him. That doesn’t mean they weren’t able to figure these things out later because it doesn’t appear that he was given tickets for these. The passenger side officer says he smells marijuana and asks about it. He’s told there is no marijuana. He clearly thinks he’s being lied to so he orders everyone out of the car to do a search. The front seat passenger, who is blind, voluntarily takes his own fake eyeballs out. He is not ordered to prove that he is blind. The backseat passenger refuses to get out of the vehicle and instead asks the driver what she should do. When the passenger side officer goes to the driver side and orders, the driver out the driver immediately starts yelling, saying he’s paralyzed and calls the officer an idiot. Well, obviously, the officer did not know that he was paralyzed at that time because he wasn’t talking to him about this. The driver climbs out of the car and sits on the ground on his own. The officer offered to allow the driver to remain in the vehicle while the search was being completed—and the driver refused, falsely claiming that it is illegal. The driver claims that he has to insert a catheter in order to pee by order of his doctor. The officer tells the driver that if he exposes himself on the side of the highway, he will be charged with indecent exposure. So apparently the driver urinates on himself but I don’t think we can tell for sure from the video. The officer offered the driver assistance in carrying him to the squad car so he could sit on a seat instead of the ground and the driver refused again. During the search of the vehicle an open alcohol container was discovered. “The civil rights lawyer” on YouTube says that he can’t tell from the video whether the open bottle of Evan Williams bourbon was found in the trunk or the passenger compartment of the vehicle, however, the officer does say out loud “open container” while searching the passenger compartment.

The video captures Alexis’s parents arriving at the scene in real-time. Their transition from frantic confusion to the soul-crushing realization that their daughter is gone is a sequence that has left the true crime community shaken. During his interrogation, Leavell didn't hide from what he did. In a hauntingly cold admission, he told investigators: "I took everything away from her." He claimed that after years of struggling, he had finally secured a career to build a future with her, and her decision to leave felt like a betrayal he couldn't handle. The legal battle concluded as the trial recently wrapped up with a clear message from the Brazos County justice system. Despite defense efforts to lean into his mental state at the time, the jury found him guilty of First-Degree M*rder. ​The Result: Brandon Leavell was sentenced to Life in Prison. As he should be.

The question is not whether he deserves execution (he does), but whether we should execute him (we shouldn't). In the USA, executing people does not reduce crime, protect people (at least if incarcerated in more protective prisons), or save money compared to long term imprisonment. Executing people hardens us as a society to others. All systems of capital punishment there are systems to protect the executioner from the deed, showing the recognition of how such acts are bad for them as human beings, even when they agree in principle it's moral. In the US, the evidence & ethics are against having any executions.

Anthony Griffin (44), who the New York Times described as a "popular battle rapper" (seriously, the article is still up...) decided it was a good idea to stab and slash 3 elderly Americans (65, 70, and 84 years old) with a Gerber Gear machete at Grand Central Station in New York City. As officers arrived on scene, the first cop pulls his Gen4 Glock 17 with night sights and tells him to drop the knife. Mr. Griffin isn't deterred by the Glock as he knows, from multiple Hollywood movies and rap songs, that it can't be detected by a metal detector. So, the second officer has to pull his Sig Sauer P226 and performs an impromptu ballistics test on Mr. Griffin's chest cavity with his Speer 124gr +p 9mm bonded hollow points as Mr. Griffin was yelling "I am Lucifer!!!" My abortion is the kind people love to judge the most. I wasn’t underage, I wasn’t assaulted, and there was no medical emergency. I got pregnant because I knowingly had unprotected sex, no accident, no rare failure, just my own choices. By their standards, it was “irresponsible.” I knew abortion was an option, and I took it. Not because I couldn’t survive it or raise a child, I simply didn’t want one. I wanted sex without becoming a parent, and I chose not to carry the pregnancy. There’s no redemption arc here. I don’t regret it. Nothing terrible happened to me afterward, no punishment, no downfall. My life is still good. And that reality alone challenges everything people like to assume about women who make this choice.

This post is an excellent litmus test for understanding of just war theory. Despite the fact that I can see how effective this would be, I must oppose it because the damage it would do to my enemy (who bashes in my mailbox) would far outweigh the good of saving my mailbox. Its disproportionality is opposed by our duty in charity (and even justice) to watch out even for the good of our enemies. (Yes, by the way, I have had my mailbox bashed in by random vandals.)
