@TheBuddyCSM They had the COHORT program for years. Went to OSUT and then on to the unit for 3 years. Back in the 80’s they used to split time between Conus and Oconus. Regimental affiliation stuff. Carson & Germany, Ord & Korea, Hawaii & Korea, etc

I had the luxury of being in the same platoon from rifleman to weapons squad leader (about 8 years) before moving to a different company to be a platoon sergeant.
The sense of pride and esprit de corps in those platoons was unmatched, because our entire lives were focused on getting better as a group and killing fools.
I didn’t conduct my first PCS until I had been in the Army for 10 years.
This can’t be done everywhere, but in my opinion there should be some places where we give it a shot and see how it goes. Maybe just offer people the option to stay if they want, while those who don’t like the unit or location can PCS as normal.
After a few years, I think we would see extremely impressive results.
It would also save a shit ton of money.

We've tried 'em all: Doctrine Organization Training Materiel Leadership Facilities Policy Every damned one of 'em, 'til we're all blue in the face. Know what we haven't ever fixed? Personnel. The Manpower model. We recruit, man, and train based on the same model that's been in place since the all-vol force came into being. Cycle men through jobs like mass-produced parts. Like conscripts. To paraphrase Sherlock Holmes: If you've tried everything and still haven't seen the expected results, the one thing you HAVEN'T tried must be the fucking answer. Leave units together longer. For 3 or even 4 years. Tie the damn contracts to service with a given formation (Division/Regt./Group/Ship). Stop moving good dudes out of jobs they're good at. Replace only for incompetence or physical injury. Stop the cycle of madness. @infantrydort

The bonfire thing is when they earn their crossed rifles. It is done after a long movement returning from the final FTX. Good motivating stuff.

I had the honor of conducting several Turning Blue ceremonies when I was a First Sergeant on Sand Hill.
The energy was absolutely awesome.
The best thing to see was a legacy infantryman placing the blue cord on his son.
Seeing these young Soldiers progress from “kid off the street” to Infantryman was a very rewarding experience, a feeling I hope I never forget.
