They had a house and land. If you look at the Lot via the library of congress it was a farmstead community: loc.gov/search/?fa=par… They all grew their own crops and bartered with each other. They were poor, but had space, food and the means/knowledge/skill to earn it. Lots to discuss but current situation not as black and white. The children you see here actually worked on the farm. So the children did contribute to income and increased labor output. In addition, no social security so children were social security. Lots of levers missing in modern day society
