In 1990: the Berlin Wall fall, starting the collapse of the USSR; Nelson Mandela was released from prison, starting the end of the South African Apartheid; the Hubble Telescope was launched; and the World Wide Web as we know it was created. Fukuyama would write The End of History, arguing that with liberal democracy we had achieved the apex of governance and were soon to be living in a world of peace. It was a time of intense hope for humanity, with the victory of the West over its last major threat for decades and the anticipation of the coming new millennium. In hindsight we know that optimism was laughably naive, and we have been consumed by the past ever since. It is a story that only someone tapped into online culture could tell because nobody outside of it realises that mire of toxic nostalgia mainstream culture is drowning in.
