Officers roll up on a car with a man that is ODing. Officers jump into action to help save his life. ​The officer approaches the vehicle parked outside an Advance Auto Parts store after observing erratic driving behavior. The driver, a 23-year-old man named Ryan, appears heavily lethargic, slurs his words, and repeatedly struggles to keep his eyes open. When questioned about potential substance use, Ryan denies taking anything, claiming his extreme exhaustion is solely due to being awake for a day and a half caring for his child. ​The situation takes a terrifying turn seconds after the officer instructs Ryan to turn off the engine and place his keys on the roof. Ryan rapidly loses consciousness, slumping completely over in the driver's seat. He immediately begins displaying agonal breathing as well as other signs of drug overdose. ​Recognizing the telltale signs of a severe opioid overdose, the officer immediately dispatches emergency medical services (EMS) and springs into action. Armed with Narcan (Naloxone), the officer administers the nasal spray to halt the effects of the narcotics. ​Because Ryan remains unresponsive and his breathing continues to fail, multiple subsequent doses of Narcan are deployed by the primary officer and arriving backup units to combat the heavy quantity of drugs in his system. A needle is quickly located on the passenger seat, confirming the high-risk nature of the medical emergency. ​Firefighters and paramedics arrive on the scene to take over advanced medical care. After receiving a heavy cumulative dose of Narcan, the medication successfully reverses the respiratory depression. Ryan suddenly gasps, opens his eyes, and awakens from the brink of death. Paramedics safely transition him to a stretcher and transport him to a local hospital for emergency evaluation. ​This man was saved due to the quick response of these officers in scene. This is a stark reminder of the dangers of drug use.
