They get notified through HMRC and you don’t even need to tell them, your claim goes on hold and you don’t need to close it down or even contact them, as this was my situation just gone January.

The state of the universal credit system currently. My friend recently lost his job and signed onto universal credit for the first time in his life after 15 years. Even though he is highly qualified and needed this as a Stop gap he still had to go to the job centre every week. However, after three months if you have not found a job, you only have to go once a month. Surely this should be the other way round? He has recently got back into full-time employment and phoned universal credit to say he no longer needs their services or money. However, this was not good enough. He was told he had to provide a payslip which he did. However, this was still not enough. He had to get a written letter from the company he now works at with a validated company stamp. The company does not have a company stamp as it is a small business without this, he has been told he cannot leave or get off universal credit. The only way to get off it now is to have an appointment in person at the job centre between Monday to Friday between the hours of 9 am and 5 pm which is exactly the time he works. He now has multiple phone calls and emails from universal credit saying he will get sanctioned and potentially fined for not attending his weekly appointment which is always scheduled for when he is in work!
