@seanluomdphd @pfau You are a doctor. God forbid you have cancer, would you want to be treated by someone who follows non-traditional methods? Or you would prefer somthing that works? Again, please let me know what you think non-traditional methods mean when it comes to science?

@seanluomdphd @pfau They want to use non traditional methods. What on earth does this mean in science? So they are not going to follow the scientific method? Please give a definition of non-traditional scientific methods. That’s like non-traditional medicine. Also know as quack.

Just talked with a well-respected computational neuroscientist friend. The situation in academia outside CS is sad. Everyone is fighting over a shrinking pool of grants. And it's happening exactly when there's more money in AI than ever. There are so many companies that say they are going to solve diseases. Any researcher at {your favorite frontier lab} can raise millions for a foundation model of biology or the brain, while the people who actually study biology and the brain can't fund their labs.

@karch_andreas @pfau That is not an accurate way to characterize the X-Labs program. It’s helpful to be honest. One’s own area being up and down on funding is not equivalent to doomerism of “scientists are not getting funded”. Or “funding is being cut across the board.” No it isn’t.

And it’s not just my field. It’s all of physics and math that’s being burned down. Beyond Xlabs they’ll fund AI (as if a few million from the NSF would make any difference compared to the huge amount of money available to the existing AI companies) and quantum (which is important but if this is the only science we do we are still going to lose).

@pfau People are obviously still funding the scientists. This is all doomer nonsense. Mismanagement of labor market is a real finding, but this is known for 30 years. People will tell you ways to cope if you ask behind closed doors.
