Discourse being so polarized, everyone feeling like they need to have a take on everything, and capitalism hurt art so aggressively. Consumption is streamlined, films/shows/projects all feel so forced… Reviews of 20-track albums get posted 40 min after midnight… incentivizes a hot take economy everywhere from artists to fans. — Labels can follow the money before the talent. Why do they need to develop an artist of their own when TikTok will summarize mainstream sentiment and tell them exactly who to chase after? New-age artists have no stage presence because they didn’t need to be an all around player to get paid like a star. If you can shoot threes you’re in the league. Artists have to follow trends to be able to afford to take the risks they want. Damn near impossible to “make it” independently. — This is all so upsetting, continuing to see true artists get priced out of their own industries while viral Twitter posts circulate with complaints about how beautiful ancient sculptures are and how skilled artists were back then. Anyone ever realize that they got so good at sculpting hands, veins, wrinkles, and all that because they went to school for it? And weren’t pushed toward learning Excel because an overly-powerful corporation would value that more than the world values talent? You can’t say you work in music, art, or anything adjacent at Thanksgiving without being asked what your back-up plan is. That sucks! In just the last 20 years we’ve watched beloved homes of creativity like Cartoon Network eat shit because they couldn’t (or wouldn’t) pump out enough nostalgia-farming remakes to stay afloat. We’ve watched Star Wars go from a creative criticism of American international politics and working-class resistance to a Disney-owned nostalgia farm that only gets occasional hits like Andor. I understand that this country and our world operate the way they do for so many reasons, but the idea that labels/studios/etc. can’t make certain kinds of music/movies/etc. because they wouldn’t be profitable is so inherently limiting and is robbing humans of so many opportunities to feel. Something new, old, different – whatever it is. — We help a system run in so many ways every day that squeezes every last drop of creativity and authentic feeling out of the world, not just art. And the fallacy that there could never be another option keeps it going. Support local artists! Musicians! Look up bars near you and go to open mic nights. Don’t be afraid to try a meal, movie, or album that you really think you won’t like. You might never like it! But it represents the minuscule changes we can make to both escape the echo chambers we don’t realize we’re so entrenched in and lead in the world, in a small way, by example. ✌️
