My teaching roots go way back. My mom turns 84 today & taught math at Ithaca College for many years. My dad taught at Cornell for even longer – 45 years I think. Lucky I got a great, public school education & had parents who taught us education is more important than anything.

What was it like being an Asian kid in America during the 1970s? Every single day, someone would make a racial slur or make a racial joke. Teachers, ”friends” & their parents, kids at school, guys (always) yelling out their car window. Yesterday it happened again. June 20, 2020.

I think I am more exhausted working from home because I draw energy from being around my students and my colleagues. Zooming everyday is a good substitute, but the spirit of spontaneous energy in the physical school environment is something I love.
