The Arts Council of Northern Ireland would like to join the many others in paying tribute to Seán Fitzsimons, who died yesterday (Thursday 5th December). A leading disability rights activist on these islands, Seán was Chair of the @UniAtypical, the organization responsible for supporting and empowering d/Deaf, disabled and neurodivergent artists across Northern Ireland. Seán was also instrumental, as project lead, in bringing the Harkin Global Disability Employment Summit to Belfast in 2022, only the second time the prestigious event had been delivered outside of the USA. The event brought together international leaders and activists across Business, Government, Philanthropy, the Third and Voluntary Sector and Academia, and the Arts Council was proud to have been invited to chair the panel session on Arts and Disability. He was a disability advisor to the British Council and in 2020 was appointed by the Department for Communities to the Expert Advisory Panel tasked with developing a new Disability Strategy for Northern Ireland, to tackle inequalities and obstacles that affect the everyday lives of d/Deaf and disabled people. Seán was a hugely influential and inspirational figure across the disability and arts communities in Northern Ireland. He will be deeply missed. Our thoughts are with his wife, Nicole, and family at this very sad time.

Hello everyone. It’s Nicole here (Sean’s wife) I wanted to let you all know that unfortunately Sean passed away yesterday, suddenly and unexpectedly. Sean was a fierce advocate for disability rights, it was his passion and his calling. He never stopped fighting for the rights of disabled people. He faced many battles in his life, and took them all on with strength and resilience I have never seen before. As many of you know and may have worked with Sean, he was intelligent, funny, warm…I could go on. Sean was also a loving and devoted husband, father, son and brother. He loved and was loved by many. As you can imagine, we are all utterly heartbroken. Keep fighting the good fight in Sean’s memory - it’s what he would have wanted. Nicole

Housing Rights has issued an Invitation to Tender to design, develop and deliver a piece of Legislative Theatre to raise awareness about the cause and impact of Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) and homelessness, as well as seeking to influence changes in policy and practice. The focus of the Legislative Theatre will be on homelessness prevention and what change needs to occur to prevent homelessness for women experiencing violence in Northern Ireland. A new report commissioned by the Arts Council shows artists are struggling to make a living in #NorthernIreland. The study, which is the first of its kind in over a decade, examined 481 responses from a diverse range of artists across various demographics, career stages, and artistic disciplines, found loss of public investment for the arts, the short-term and long-term impact of #Covid19 and the cost-of-living crisis to be among the challenges which have shaped the acts sector over the last 10 years.
