The worst fire years (hectares burned) in Australia were right after the extraordinary La Nina in 2010-11 (based on satellite-AVHRR). About 100 Million ha burned in 2011 and 2012. The last 3 years of La Nina have been less extreme, but plenty of grass fuel to burn in dry season
