A whole Russian family was wiped out except their 8-year-old daughter, Maria Chelysheva. In 2014, Maria’s 42-year-old father, Mikhail Chelyshev, wanted to have potato for lunch. When he entered the cellar where the potatoes were stored, he collapsed and died. His wife and son went to check what had happened to him, they also collapsed and died. Maria’s 68-year-old grandmother called for help, but she entered the cellar before any help could arrive. She was met with the same fate; she collapsed and died. The family made the mistake of storing their potatoes in their enclosed cellar and allowing them to decompose. Potatoes contain solanine, a glycoalkaloid that can be very toxic. As the potatoes decayed, they released toxic level of the glycoalkaloid that shut down their nervous system when they entered the cellar.

@jzux Back when I was 14 and was feeling particularly rebellious one day, I said I don't believe in god on a whim. Enjoying the shocked reaction from friends, I made up an explanation. Ended up accidentally convincing myself to at least take the stance seriously. The rest is history.

there are a few different forms of this. pretend-optimism is one. pretend-curiosity is another. pretend-excitement... paramore has a song called "fake happy". fake happy seems temporarily less bad than real sad, but as a cope it eventually makes things worse

@visakanv Would this look different at different resolutions? If you're interested/natural at X but only just beginning, don't let go of the Y, Z you also do. But if you're fairly advanced in X then play around inside X itself?

i guess my contrarian opinion is that i think there's a wisdom in refusing to double down on success
