#WATCH | Jammu and Kashmir: At the historic Martand Sun Temple in Anantnag, Kashmir, devotees gathered to offer prayers. The traditional sacred fair currently underway in Mattan is popularly known as the Baan Mass Mela (Banmas). It is being observed during Purushottam Maas (Adhik Maas), a highly auspicious month in the Hindu lunar calendar dedicated to Lord Vishnu. This sacred month in 2026 runs from May 17 to June 15.

Unless basic religious education becomes fairly universal, this won’t stop. Lot of resources are available online these days. No excuse for parents anymore. Be aware, educate. Everyone has phones these days in India.

I was listening to Illayaraja songs on my drive today and I realized a few things about Illayaraja and his music and why he probably is one of the greatest music directors of all time 1. The songs stay in your sub conscious memory even if you have listned to the song once, And if someone even mentions that song in passing, you remember the movie, the setting, the context, the tune everything, even if the movie had released before you were born. OTOH you don't remember any of the songs made by Anirudh and other latest music directors 2. You will never tire of Illayaraja's songs. You can listen to them on the loop, and they still sound as amazing as they did when you listened for the first time. You never get tired of them With today's song, as pulsating as they may be while you listen to them, you want to move on from them as quickly as possible. 3. Illayaraja ensured lyrics of a song got its due respect and position in the song. Which in turn inspired lyricists to give their best. They wrote songs with great depth and meaning, which were then elevated thru his music. Thereforr most Illayaraja songs made you think and introspect Today, lyrics are meant to be a background buzz, meant to be drowned by a cacophony of electronic noise and beats. So they lyricists have nowadays stopped trying. I mean what's the point of writing good lyrics, when all people care about are the beats. 4. Illayaraja never lost consistency. He was as good in 1976 as he was in 2016. He never lost his musical acumen and never sounded repetitive. Is there any music director who gave a diverse album like Hey Ram 24 years into his career? You already can't distinguish a Beast From a Vikram from a Jawaan of Ani in the 14th year of his career. Truly Illayaraja is a maestro who was probably sent by God to make music so that plebians like us got some peace and happiness.

The harassment that Michel Danino is being put through after a lifetime of commitment to the highest scholastic integrity in service of Bharat Mata is unconscionable. No matter who says what, I stand by this assertion. As patriots, we should not be hypocritical.

As a dravidiya social justice warrior, why do you call yourselves arasan, which is a royal title? The word is inherently against social justice. Why not something like ooppie or kazhaga-kothadimai etc.? Arasan is also by the way, sanskrit.

When questions about Tamil identity come up, Brahmins often cite Parithimar Kalaignar (Suryanarayana Sastri) as proof of Brahmin love for the Tamil language. But how many Brahmins actually followed his example, by Tamilizing their own names or giving their children Tamil names?

Muhammad never fought against Arab pagans. His own parents and community were Arab pagans. He was nursed by a pagan woman. He married a pagan woman Khadija. After his death, there was also a great uprising by the pagan tribes against Abu Bakr.

Banabhatta in Kadambari describes the priest of Chandika temple in Vidhya forest as an involuntary celibate (incel) – गृहीततुरगब्रह्मचर्य. It describes a man whose celibacy lasts until he gets a woman. He performed all sorts of rituals to attract women but without any luck.

It seems like some folks here don’t understand the difference between “proselytizing” to share about one’s religion versus proselytizing because your theology links converting other people with your own salvation. There are massively different implications. It also seems like some folks don’t understand the difference between examples of individual people disparaging other people’s religions versus religious leaders disparaging other religions because that is a part of their doctrine. The former is people being people, and a dozen examples - even hundreds of examples - is not proof of a theological system. However, when official religious leaders preach these ideas (and not just anecdotal one-offs), that’s a system. Time and time again, folks conflate individual actions with systemic design. Are the actions an aberration or a feature? It matters. Lotta Einsteins on here thinking they’re mic dropping by pointing to individual examples of Hindus being jerks when they’re actually revealing ignorance about systemic differences in religions. Whether it’s willful or not is not for me to say.

I’m genuinely not trying to insult anyone here, but I find it so fascinating that monotheists describe polytheists as immoral for worshipping false, "man-made gods" when we are the ones who encoded reverence for the Divine in all its manifestations (the sun, the moon, the earth, the oceans, etc.) and they are the ones who follow the word of a human prophet who told them who the one true god is. Also, we don’t go around telling them their beliefs are false or sit around talking about it, either. We just do us.

not by lay Shaivas. Navalar cud hv still learnt Skt in his formational years, but we can’t conclude that purely based on his knowledge of the siddhanta or him being a defender of the tradition.

A bit of nuance is needed here. A good siddhantin/siddhantic polemicist of the Tamil tradition doesn’t hv to know Skt coz the meikanta shastras are in Tamil. Vedas and agamas were of course central to the tradition, but were learnt by the priestly class - the shivacharyas,

Also shows how Buddhist lay followers were basically Hindus who learnt Buddhist doctrine. Flaunting their varna, gotra etc while having clearly Buddhist names and donating to their sarvastivadin teachers.
