Joined Jill’s lab with a dream: to visit the birthplace of genome-resolved metagenomics. 🌏 Before graduating, I promised Jill would take us there. Dream turned reality thanks to @Jwestrob’s shared vision! A few months ago, Jill made it happen, guiding us to where it all began.

Glass sponges form basalia spicule structures with unique optical qualities. In some cases their refractive and light collecting qualities surpass manufactured fiber optic! Experimenting with lasers with the @SchmidtOcean ROV team. #DiagnosingDeepCoral #coralpulse @WHOI (1/2)

Could certain chemicals be used to "armor" corals? The #DiagnosingDeepCoral team is at sea on R/V Falkor (too), outfitting ROV SuBastian w/ new sensors & tech to investigate the potential for enhancing coral resilience. The first weekly update video is up: youtube.com/watch?v=m9AMQN…

Check out these beautiful sponges! Sea sponges are filter feeders, and have an important microbiome just like we do— can’t wait to sequence and see what’s there!

Yesterday's #DiagnosingDeepCoral ROV dive was a great 1st step- the team was able to test tech like the SOLARIS sensor & found a wonderful location for further research. The ship is preparing for another dive tonight. More info: schmidtocean.org/cruise/health-…

Lhakpa Sherpa's perseverance and strength is deeply inspiring! She holds the women's world record of 10 Everest ascents 🏔️This climber merits sponsorship--@BlackDiamond @OspreyPacks @ScarpaNA @redbull

Lhakpa Sherpa has climbed Mount Everest 10 times, the most ascents ever by a woman. A lack of sponsorship deals means much of her training takes place at a Whole Foods in Connecticut where she works. nyti.ms/3Hn63JI

As you may have seen in @PictureaSciFilm Nancy Hopkins at MIT, in 1996, noted that gender inequities in space led to unfair ability to do science. Today, in 2023, @Scripps_Ocean published a report on gender inequities in space allocation. diversity.ucsd.edu/_files/reports…
