According to old tradition, daffodils bloom around 1st March in honour of Saint David, the patron saint of Wales. His feast day falls on this date and coincides with the beginning of meteorological spring. #StDavidsDay #FolkloreSunday

A Chumash legend tells that when the Earth was created the Great Spirit adorned the dark mountains with small colourful stones. The South Wind, marvelling at their beauty, breathed life into them. They grew wings, fluttered away and became the first butterflies. #FolkloreThursday

The USS Constitution, launched in 1797 and nicknamed “Old Ironsides” is the world’s oldest commissioned warship still afloat.
Built from massive white oak and live oak timbers, she earned her legendary reputation during the War of 1812, when enemy cannonballs famously bounced off her dense hull.
Maintaining a ship built in the 18th century requires materials that simply can’t be bought at a lumber yard. The Navy discovered long ago that the only way to preserve her authentically was to grow the exact type of old‑growth white oak used in her original construction.
To secure this future supply, the Navy established the Constitution Grove at the Naval Support Activity Crane base in Indiana, where more than 50,000 acres of forest are managed specifically to produce white oaks that take 150 to 200 years to mature.
These trees will replace hull planks, keel sections, and structural beams during major restorations, ensuring the ship remains seaworthy for generations. It’s one of the most unusual long‑term conservation programs in the world: a modern navy cultivating centuries‑old timber to preserve a vessel that predates the White House itself.
