⚡️ Some news! I’m thrilled that my long-time colleague, co-investor and friend, @aroetter, has joined @MoxxieVentures full-time and we’ve raised an $85M Fund together!

@SFSanj Yes. We bid on one that was listed ~17% below what they BOUGHT it for 4 years ago and it ended up selling 50% over asking. Of course we lost. :) It's a perfect storm of very little supply, very large demand and a lot of buyers who simply value time over money.

It's a matter of time before Harvey/Legora start providing legal services directly and use their tech to take on their current client base. Tech companies and law firms are converging. Law firms are seeing the writing on the wall. Kirkland is developing their own technology. Other law firms are switching to Claude Enterprise to avoid giving Harvey/Legora proprietary knowledge of their workflows. The valuations of Harvey/Legora (11b/5.6b) are surpassing the total addressable market for legal software. The tech world is excited about the services market for a reason. The legal services market is enormous (3trillion) and AI is allowing for it to be disrupted in a meaningful way for the first time. K&E's move here should be a signal to all lawyers about what is going to happen to big law in the future.

@KatieS @flySFO Brag away because I'm hanging out in the SFO airport with other poor souls suffering through a 3 hour "weather" delay.

Very stoked about my next adventure. I’ve joined Spellbook, but not as CTO. I’m joining as an Executive IC. It probably means different things to different people. It means I'm here to build and be hands on in every part of the company. I've invested and been advising and getting to know @scottastevenson and the team for more than a year. At some point it became obvious the most useful thing I could do was stop talking about ideas and go work with the team. With AI making code cheap to copy, what's going to be hard to copy is the shape of a company. How a team learns, decides, and ships. That's what I want to work on. It's what I've spent the last three decades learning to do. Why Spellbook? The world has entered into one of the largest investment cycles in decades. Trillions of dollars are being deployed into energy, AI, manufacturing, transportation and the modernization of critical global systems. Despite this, progress still moves at the speed of contracts. Spellbook’s mission is to modernize the $1 trillion transactional legal market so the contract system can keep pace with the global economy. At the same time, every contract ever signed is becoming searchable, comparable, and weaponizable by counterparties, regulators, and plaintiffs' lawyers. You will be attacked. We're hiring. Slight bias toward Canada, but remote-friendly for great talent. DM me.

@ehsanik I am so sorry! Is there anything we can do to help? Could your legal team push for exemptions (at least to help your green card process)? You have the world’s best GC who is a former Ambassador!

Today I was supposed to be on my way to Türkiye for my wedding, to meet up with my family and have them finally meet my partner and husband. We had everything planned. We chose Turkiye since it's close to Iran and my partner and I could both go there and have our families meet each other. We were supposed to get married with our close family and a small group of friends on a boat on the Mediterranean Sea at sunset. Because of the war, all flights to and from Iran are cancelled and my family can’t leave Iran, so we had to call off the wedding. Instead, this is how my day looked like. I woke up to a reminder to call my grandma (I used to call her every Friday morning). I snoozed the reminder until next Friday, just like I have done for the past many years. I can’t call her like our tradition these days because there is no way to call home. All international calls to Iran are blocked, and the internet is fully shut down by the regime. I got to work and right as I opened my computer I received an email I had scheduled to send to myself 5 years ago: “Apply for citizenship.” This summer marks 11 years of being in the US and 5 years of being a green card holder. I am now eligible to file for citizenship, but it doesn’t matter because an executive order was signed a few months ago that banned all Iranians from applying for any visa or citizenship. At lunch I opened Twitter just to see what’s up in the world and saw the news that those who don’t have a green card now need to leave the US before they can get one. This means every one of my Iranian friends who are here on a visa now has to go back home (on which flight?) to get a green card??? As if it’s that easy? We all know getting back to the US for Iranians is a huge challenge (months and months of waiting for a visa, with a chance of never being able to come back). And this is just a normal Friday for an Iranian. These days, when people ask how I’m doing and how I’m handling everything, I just say: It’s okay, it’s okay. It will be okay some day. But the reality is: nothing is okay. I’m in constant pain. I haven’t seen my family and loved ones in years, I barely hear about their wellbeing, and I’m constantly worried about them. I’m just burying myself in work because that’s the only distraction that can save me from losing my mind. I’m not okay. None of us are okay. We are just barely holding it together…

We close priced rounds in 3-4 days for 10k total. Investors have to cooperate and not do extensive diligence/heavy markups (which doesn't make sense for seed/series a startups anyway). We are in a closed beta now - reach out if you want to be added to our list.

The speed of equity funding rounds are doing a disservice to founders. Seeing so many founders agree terms for rounds at $3M in ARR and 4 weeks by the time legals are done, their ARR is at $15-$20M. The speed of company progression is outpacing legal completion.

At our @MoxxieVentures AGM last week, I shared with our LPs that one of the most rewarding parts of seeing our portfolio mature has been the opportunity to work alongside exceptional later-stage investors who bring deep domain expertise and real GTM support, especially in complex verticals like healthcare where relationships and industry knowledge matter enormously. There are a lot of great investors in healthcare, but Lynne Chou O'Keefe from @definevc is truly in a class of her own. I ran into Lynne today and told her that directly, then realized it would be irresponsible if I didn't share this more widely. :) If you're a healthcare founder, find a way to work with Lynne. She’s brilliant, empathetic, deeply strategic and simply one of the very best partners a founder could ask for.
