Springtime is day trip time, and the old monastery at Esrum Kloster is an easy drive from Copenhagen, Roskilde, Helsingør, or Kalundborg. It’s fascinating to see what’s left of the old abbey where the Cistercian monks lived, prayed, and sang, as well as their innovative heating and hydraulic water systems. And if you love marketing and retail, you’ll love the Esrum Kloster gift shop, which features products from abbeys and monastaries all over Europe. Abbey-made candy, jams and jellies, soaps and moisturizers, beers, it’s all there. The area around Esrum Kloster is a national park, hich makes it great for a picnic, and there are picnic tables available. There's also a café, which we did not visit. The café opening hours vary, so check in advance before visiting – there’s not much else in the area besides the large and beautiful Esrum Lake.

I've really enjoyed watching the Artemis II mission into space, carried out by four astronauts who are all exceptional people. The mission really brought Americans together in a good way. One thing I notice from Europe is how open the American astronauts were about the spiritual aspects of their lives - not just Victor Glover, but commander Reid Wiseman, who is proudly Jewish, and pointed out Israel from the window of the spaceship. I cannot imagine any European scientist being so willing to share his or her religious beliefs.
Victor Glover@AstroVicGlover

Home, again! Mission complete. I hope we glorified God, humanity, our families and our terrific teams a @NASA and @csa_asc. Time to share the good news!

Scrap your books, they said. Get a Kindle, they said. You'll have a whole library on one device, they said. In my brief life, I have owned records, cassettes, CDs, VHS tapes, DVDs. I have never seen a technology that didn't end up defunct or superceded. I'm keeping my books.

This is A NIGHTMARE. Amazon is bricking old Kindles, including my beloved Kindle 5 (with the side buttons). I hate the touch screen versions, I've tried them and I'm always accidentally flipping pages.

Two of the great Danish 🇩🇰 values - authenticity and having a sense of humor about yourself - are on display in the lobby of Hotel Kolding, which has framed both positive and negative reviews from @Tripadvisor . So right next to a proudly framed five-star review that says "The breakfast was phenomenal" you'll see a less enthusiastic reviews saying "The beds were horrific. I was swallowed by a marshmallow consistency soft mattress" or "The corridors are stuffy and reminded me of a hospital." The "self-irony" or willingness to be made fun of is a key part of Danish 🇩🇰 identity. Social scientists who measure 𝐠𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐭𝐨𝐩𝐡𝐨𝐛𝐢𝐚, or the fear of being laughed at, is lower in Denmark than anywhere else in the world. This can also manifest itself as being uncomfortable with praise, an outgrowth of the 𝐉𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐞 𝐋𝐚𝐰, which suggests that no individual should think themselves better than others. However, praise is allowed under Jante Law if it shows that you still don't take yourself too seriously. For example, Hotel Kolding has framed a review saying "The staff was very nice, and took care of my hamster while I went out to see the city."

I highly doubt either Christian or Isabella will be "at the front" on combat operations. Their role is symbolic. In addition, the Royal Family is funded by the Danish people - Christian will never have a paying job! - in order to serve in that symbolic role. They are de-facto employees of the Danish government. Barron Trump is a private citizen receiving no public money. Presidents' children generally do not serve in the military (for example, the Obama girls did not) unless they have already been in the military before the President was elected (such as Biden's son Beau.)

@kaydenmark Proud of the Danish Royal Family for leading with honor — unafraid to stand at the front for Denmark, unlike certain cowards who are happy to send soldiers to the Middle East for a pointless war while making sure their own son is spared military service.

Having grown up in a country without a royal family, I find them very useful in symbolic roles like this one. If other young women are going to be required to serve in the Danish military, it's a good symbol to have Princess Isabella go first. Isabella is second in line to the throne, but for what it's worth, first-in-line to the throne princesses like Ingrid of Norway, Leonor of Spain and Elisabeth of Belgium have also served time in uniform. The Danish Royals are a very sporty family - they regularly participate in the annual "Royal Run" in locations around Denmark - so Isabella, at age 19, shouldn't find the physical aspects of being a soldier too difficult. She is joining a regiment in Slagelse, Denmark after graduating from high school/secondary school in June.

Danish women can now be drafted for 11 months of service in the Danish Army, up from a previous 4 months. One of the first women to serve the full 11 months will be Princess Isabella, who is second in line to the throne behind her brother Crown Prince Christian (at right).

🎧 A new episode of the How to Live in Denmark 🇩🇰 podcast is out now: "The Spontaneous Dane: Why Friendship Needs a Calendar." Let me be direct: if you find it hard to make friends in Denmark, it’s not just you. One of the biggest cultural differences between Denmark and, say, southern Europe, is that Danes don’t do much spontaneous social life. Instead, social life is planned, often weeks in advance. And casual social contact, like chatting to someone you don't already know, or joining in an existing conversation, is not always welcome. This can come as a real shock, especially if you come from a culture where human connection starts informally and grows from there. In Denmark, it’s often the opposite. Connection happens in structured settings, at agreed times that everyone can put in their calendar 📆. (One exception: as seen in the illustration, spring. 🌱 This time of year, when the snow is gone and the buds finally start to come out on the trees, an unexpected afternoon of sunshine is a great excuse to toss aside all of your pre-existing plans and go have a beer by the water. And there is almost always a place to have a beer 🍻 by the water, wherever you are in Denmark.) In this episode, I talk about where this passion for planning comes from, and what it feels like when you’re on the outside of it. If you’ve experienced this yourself, I’d be very interested to hear your perspective. ----- You’ll learn: 🇩🇰 Why Danes rarely do anything spontaneously 🇩🇰 How friendships actually form in Denmark 🇩🇰 Why your Danish colleague may schedule things weeks in advance 🇩🇰 And how you can successfully build a social life anyway. The "How to Live in Denmark" podcast is available free on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Amazon Audible, Google Podcasts and more. Every episode is less than 10 minutes long.

Instead of deaf people just watching the actual artists perform, CBC puts a sign language interpreter on to perform air guitar & drum solos for them to watch along side of it. Whats going on in Canada? It’s a 24/7 nut house

Shoutout to the awesome Danish lady who's been helping out a Ukrainian newly arrived in Denmark! She reached out to me to share that her mentee found the Ukrainian version of "How to Work in Denmark: Tips for Finding a Job, Succeeding at Work, and Understanding Your Danish Boss" very helpful. The book explains Danish business culture, and gives a heads up on what Danish managers and colleagues are expecting on the job. Translated by volunteers, the Ukrainian version of the book is 100% free for download at howtoworkindenmark.com.

And this, my friends, is the difference between Danish politics and US politics. Check out this fabulous musical campaign video for Spencer Pratt, a reality star running for mayor of Los Angeles. As he makes clear in the video, the current mayor, Karen Bass, was on a personal trip to Ghana when fires ravaged the city. Spencer's own home was burned down; so was his parents' home. I must say that I think being a reality star is becoming a good qualification for being a politician in the 21st century. Reality stars are people who are very, very comfortable with the media and with public exposure as well as public ridicule. And most of their dirty secrets have already been exposed.

@Broecher @mattyglesias That may be true in some places, but that wasn't the way I was recruited. Kobenhavns Kommune put up a website and let anyone who wanted DK1388 for working 7am-midnight apply. You were allowed to choose from multiple voting locations. No one asked my political affiliations.

@kaydenmark @mattyglesias All parties are contacted and offered to send names. I think very few non-political people are signing up by themselves. The council then fills the remaining slots with employees from the administration, these might be asked if they want to volunteer.
