In 1863, during the American Civil War, an enslaved man known as Peter (sometimes called Gordon in some records) escaped from a plantation in Louisiana.
He ran for days through swamps and forests, trying to stay hidden while slave catchers and dogs searched for him. It was dangerous every step of the way, but he kept going because he wanted freedom.
Eventually, he reached a Union Army camp in Baton Rouge. He was weak, starving, and exhausted. When soldiers there asked him to remove his shirt, they saw something that shocked them into silence.
His back was covered in deep scars from years of whippings under slavery. A photographer captured that moment in 1863. The image became known as “The Scourged Back,” and later “Whipped Peter.”
The photograph was published widely during the war and became one of the most powerful pieces of evidence showing the brutality of slavery. It helped many people who had never seen it understand what enslaved people were going through.
