He picked up the chick, took the 10 rupees he had saved, and went straight to a hospital. Not to a veterinarian, not to an adult first, but to the place he believed could fix what had gone wrong. He asked the staff to save it, offering everything he had without hesitation. By then, the chick had already died. There was nothing anyone could do. But Derek did not fully understand that. To him, problems had solutions, and money was how you solved them. Even after being told, he still wanted to return with more money, as if trying harder might change the outcome. That is what makes the moment unforgettable. Not the accident, but the instinct to take responsibility, even before understanding what responsibility truly means. Sometimes, a child’s view of the world feels more honest than our own.
