On the morning of his 95th birthday, Joe woke up at exactly 6AM. This small irony never failed to irritate him: he had never been a morning person, but the more the years passed, the earlier he woke. “Well, this is it!” He said, to no one, as he swung his legs out of bed. 1/

There was no response. The doc frowned, and felt for a pulse. “Well I’ll be… he actually did it.” And the doc sat a few moments longer, saying a prayer in his mother tongue. Joe opened a door, and beamed to see Sally, and so many people he loved. And he stepped through.

@npcrowe Under the Skin — brilliant new book by NYT magazine writer @lindavillarosa — powerful narrative that knits together history of racism in medicine, the devastating impact on the health of our nation, and her journey as journalist, patient, caregiver — vital read for all clinicians

I’m gonna put this bluntly. 1️⃣If you are a healthcare professional - doctor, nurse, pharmacist, etc - & you are telling your patient that they are inherently “at risk” of certain poor outcomes because they are Black, you are committing malpractice. 1/

@LGlaucomflecken thank you for perfectly explaining why checking in at MSKCC w/ my newly dx child yesterday i didn’t recognize my identity as “visitor” - maybe it would help (lexically) if we try to define the experience vs the relationship — shellshocked, terrified, gutted—yet shielding it all

The term “caregiver”needs work. It’s a hospital-centered term, by way of the patient. It describes the caregiver’s *work* in relation to *someone else.* It ignores the real and myriad ways the caregiver lives with and is affected by the disease daily. 🧵 1/8

@uche_blackstock 1. allow yourself to write badly and imperfectly — just get it down, then go back and shape. 2. get a reader you trust to call out your blind spots & push you to be even braver. 3. don’t fall in love early— revisions often require sacrificing our darlings 4. be ruthlessly honest

This month, I’ve started, in earnest, writing the manuscript for my upcoming generational memoir LEGACY. The book will be the third baby that I birth. No matter how it turns out, I will love it unconditionally with all my heart.

congrats @SKriegerMD — can’t think of a better way to celebrate that auspicious debut. here’s a dynamic view of topographical model showcasing 20 yrs of #ms in 20 seconds w/ simultaneous animations of localization, loss of reserve, recapitulation, and disability accumulation
stephen krieger@SKriegerMD

six years to the day after the topographical model of #multiplesclerosis was presented at the #AANAM in 2015, she’s now officially “in the textbook.” still making the case that #MS is one disease yet unique in every person, here’s the original pub: nn.neurology.org/content/nnn/3/…

The line for #COVID19 testing at my neighborhood’s urgent care center this morning. It’s the longest line that I’ve ever seen there and signifies the profound damage committed by this administration to undermine public health messaging. THREAD.
