Ang galing nina Elijah and Ralph. Both were excellent and supportive to each other's statements. And KD, you were a shocker too. I can't believe na ganyan hosting skills mo. Parang Robi Domingo.

Buti nalang napasama sya dito. #YSpeakPressFreedom

my opinion. while influencers are ahead when it comes to commanding general public perception—especially on social media—they still shouldn’t be held to the same standards as journalists. (1/10)

[Admin’s Stance: YNOT] Question: “Influencers should be held to the same standards as journalists.” My stand is YNOT Influencers should not be held to the exact same standards as journalists. Influencers should still follow basic ethical standards. Dapat out of the question na ang fake news, misinformation, slander, libel, reckless accusations, at deliberately misleading content. Your words can shape public opinion, damage reputations, affect behavior, and influence political or social decisions. This matters because social media is no longer just for entertainment. Sa Pilipinas, online platforms and social media remain among the most popular sources of news, especially for urban audiences. [1] Kaya whether influencers admit it or not, part na sila ng public information ecosystem. And psychologically, influencers are powerful because audiences often form parasocial relationships with them. Ibig sabihin, followers may feel a one-sided closeness and trust toward an influencer. .... Na parang “kilala ko ’to, mabait ’to, honest ’to.” Studies show that this can increase perceived credibility and make people more likely to share influencer content. [2] So minsan, people believe an influencer not because the claim is well-researched, but because the influencer feels relatable. Hindi dahil may evidence. Hindi dahil may data. Kundi dahil “vibes trustworthy.” And honestly, vibes are not citations. There is also the illusory truth effect, where people are more likely to believe a statement kapag paulit-ulit nila itong nakikita or naririnig. [3] This is dangerous online because one false claim can be reposted, reacted to, stitched, quoted, and repeated until it starts to feel true. And that is how misinformation gets a glow-up. Because of this, influencers should have standards. They should verify serious claims before posting, correct mistakes publicly, avoid malicious accusations, disclose paid partnerships, and clearly separate personal opinion from factual reporting. Pero journalists should still be held to a higher and more rigorous standard. Journalism is a profession built on verification, evidence, context, fairness, and accountability. Ethical journalism requires journalists to seek truth, verify information, identify sources clearly, avoid distortion, provide context, and correct errors promptly. [4] These are not optional extras. Hindi ito “bonus points” lang. These are central to journalism’s role in a democratic society, academia and future excerpts of history. This is where the distinction matters. Influencers usually exist to entertain, persuade, promote, comment, or share personal experience. Journalists exist to investigate, verify, contextualize, and inform the public using evidence. May overlap minsan, yes. But they are not the same. If we force influencers to meet the exact same standards as journalists, we risk blurring the line between influence and journalism. Kasi let’s be honest ah... Having followers does not automatically make someone a reliable source. Popularity is not credibility. A ring light is not a newsroom. A confident tone is not evidence. So the better position is tiered accountability. Influencers should be accountable for harm, dishonesty, defamation, and misinformation. But journalists should be held to stricter standards because they claim the role of public truth-tellers. If influencers want to be treated as serious sources of information, then they must meet journalistic standards: ✅proper fact-checking ✅research ✅evidence ✅transparency ✅willingness to correct mistakes Pero kung hindi nila kayang gawin iyon, then their statements should be treated for what they are - influential opinions, and definitely not journalism. So yes, influencers need standards. But no, they should not automatically be held to the same standards as journalists. The standard should depend on the role they are performing and the level of authority they are asking the public to give them. Kasi kung gusto mong pakinggan like a journalist, then work like a journalist. #YSpeakPressFreedom #WhatElseKD #KDEstrada Sources: [1] Reuters Institute Digital News Report 2024: Philippines [2] “Parasocial relations and social media influencers’ persuasive power” [3] Illusory truth effect research [4] Society of Professional Journalists Code of Ethics [5] UNESCO “Behind the Screens” report / content creator study that found that 62% of surveyed digital content creators did not verify information before sharing it.
