At the High-Level Forum on Universal Health Coverage (UHC) held in Tokyo, Japan, Nigeria was acknowledged as one of only eight global champions driving the movement to guarantee essential healthcare for all people amilestone reflecting the nation’s accelerating health reforms and patient-centered progress. The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, represented the country at the forum and highlighted Nigeria’s firm commitment to ensuring that every Nigerian regardlessof background or location, can access safe, quality, and affordable healthcare. “This recognition is a testament to the bold reforms led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over the last two and a half years. We are transforming healthcare delivery so that basic services reach all Nigerians across our communities,” Prof. Pate stated.   Strengthening Partnerships, Powering Reforms During the visit, Prof. Pate met with the Japanese Minister of Health and key global development partners, where Nigeria expanded collaboration to support: • Primary healthcare revitalization • Domestic manufacturing of vaccines & essential medicines • Public health emergency preparedness • Technical expertise through Japan’s newly launched UHC Hub • Financial support for Nigeria’s Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative He emphasized that Federal, State, and Local Governments in Nigeria are mobilizing more domestic investment than ever before, supported by strategic international partnerships from Japan, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the World Bank Group, WHO, and others. Nigerians at the Heart of Progress Nigeria’s reform efforts are specifically designed to deliver impact where it matters most — in the lives of ordinary Nigerians. Ongoing priorities include: • Expanding primary healthcare coverage • Reducing financial hardship in accessing care • Increasing health worker availability and performance • Enhancing essential services for women, children, and vulnerable groups “We are seeing concrete improvements and will sustain the momentum. Our mission is simple: deliver more, deliver better — for every Nigerian family,” Prof. Pate added. Championing a Healthier Future The Minister expressed appreciation to President Tinubu for placing health at the center of national development: “This administration believes a healthier population is critical for Nigeria’s prosperity.
