We are devastated that Dax Pierson has passed away. We were so grateful to work alongside Dax on his debut album Nerve Bumps (A Queer Divine Dissatisfaction) and have him perform at our 15 year anniversary party this July. Reflecting on his full life with this poignant review from WIRE
“In 1943, choreographer Martha Graham said that "no artist is pleased... There is only a queer divine dissatisfaction, a blessed unrest that keeps us marching and makes us more alive than the others." The quote served as Dax Pierson's guide in the production of his debut LP, speaking just as much to the struggle innate to artistic pursuits in general as to the obstacles that he faces specifically as a quadriplegic with limited mobility in his hands.
Following a car accident while on tour with his former band Subtle, Pierson was left with severe spinal cord injuries and finger paralysis, which permanently impacted his ability to make music. Years later, iPad apps and laptop controllers have allowed him to regain command of the production process, chronicling his history of abilities lost and regained, and tying together the threads of his expansive artistic influences. The sounds on Nerve Bumps delineate an unbroken musical chain that runs from abrasive 1980s post-punk to raw-nerved jazz and ruminative pop/R&B/dance fusion. The compositions shapeshift from beginning to end, flowing from languid triphop rhythms in "I Slay The Pain" to pulpy sci-fi instrumental touchstones in "Catch"
While Pierson is vocal about not being defined by his disability, he still centres it in his work; the back cover of the album features a picture of his wheelchair, its thorny arm and footholds sticking out in a pronged and lifeless profile. There's a quiet defiance in Pierson's decision to use this image. In juxtaposition to his own range of motion, his music teems with movement and energy.

Here we hear selected particle collisions turned into spatialised sound. This process creates sonic signatures of particles – such as the #HiggsBoson and the #Wboson – and of the “missing mass” in the @CMSExperiment detector, a key experimental feature of #DarkMatter.
The work of artist Chris Henschke, this project suggests a different way to see CMS – a microphone listening to the fundamental particles of the #Universe
Henschke works with digital and analogue media, sound and light, and experimental science, and has been developing novel ways of visualising and sonifying data from the CMS experiment since 2014.
