Community leaders are fighting to protect the history of Seneca Village, NYC’s first significant Black settlement! In the 1800's, more than 200 Black residents lived there. Today, historians are sharing the stories of this settlement and preserving its Black history!

@tiff4mahogany I learned about Seneca Village when I was in H.S., but that’s only because I live here & had a Black American History teacher. Every time we tried to build something, this country razed it to the ground. The only thing that remains is one plaque at 85th St & Central Park West. 💯

I didn’t know that where Central Park in NYC is located was a thriving Black American neighborhood. They relocated the Black people to build a park. I just found that out this year.

Last month we celebrated Juneteenth alongside artists, poets, and neighbors in the historic Seneca Village landscape. Hear from a few of our featured performers Rakiem Walker, Kayden Hern, and Courtney Symone Stanton on what this day and community means to them. 💚

Successful black communities and towns. A THREAD! Did you know that an entire Manhattan village owned by black people was destroyed to build Central Park. The community was called Seneca Village. It spanned from 82nd Street to 89th Street.

Wendell Pierce
Wendell Pierce@WendellPierce·
A man of deep goodness, warmth, talent, and charm. He challenged himself in music, art, cinema, spoken word and writing. We did Shakespeare together, crime drama and played dear friends on TV at one point. Art imitating life. Forever youthful, he had a huge capacity for joy but admonished those who did not afford him the respect he had earned. Disciplined. He exercised his right of self determination. A tragic loss of a man who demonstrated the best in our humanity. Rest in Peace, brother.

In the 1800s, #SenecaVillage was a bustling community, before it was displaced through eminent domain for the construction of Central Park. Learn the community's stories, then visit the site—located on the west side of the Park from 82nd to 89th streets: bit.ly/3Zpol7I

Did you know that in 1855, more than half of the Black households in #SenecaVillage owned their own land? This was 5x greater than the rate of property ownership among all New Yorkers at the time. This 1856 map depicts just a few of the properties owned by Black residents. ⬇️

Uncover the story of Andrew Williams! In 1825, at age 25, this African-American shoe shiner purchased the first three lots of #SenecaVillage, marking the beginning of this important community. Delve into the rich pre-Park history for #BlackHistoryMonth: bit.ly/3OUL7OC
