My uncle retired from running the farm 19 years ago and handed our little operation over to my wife and I. He still lives in the farm house and is active. Last week he bought a new truck and wanted to pay insurance himself instead of just being a driver on our policy like the past. Got a call from our agent that because he has an active roll and has a better insurance rating than me, they will use his score and keep use altogether on it all because it could save us a little. I agreed. Called me back the next day, Our insurance just dropped 30% for the entire operation. I’m baffled, almost upset that they didn’t figure this out 19 years ago. I could buy a 40 every year for what we spend on insurance. So anyway, happy he bought a new truck!

@Bkitch1Bodie @JasonSchley Grew my best 3 pivots of corn ever this year. All 3 lived on 40-50 pounds of soil available N until we fertigated June 25th which was 8 weeks after planting. One of the fields ended with a 11 bushel per thousand yield versus population. Crazy high for my irrigated environment.

Read this!! I’ve got the data from our farm. We utilized foliar N which allowed us to reduce soil N but allowed for the plant to continue to pump high level exudates and allowed for Weoc levels to build. First time in my 7 years of pulling these soils I was above my Weoc goal
Jason Schley@JasonSchley

I would agree with this comment, N deficiency limits the potential gain in soil carbon, it also limits a system from creating a healthy plant, so it’s a double whammy on WEOC. ***Microbes need N. They don’t like excessive N. most farms have excessive N at a minimum for at least an extended period of time. Lower N rates favor fungal-dominated communities, which efficiently incorporate C into stable WEOC fractions. High N shifts to bacteria, which respire more C as CO₂, reducing WEOC by 10-20%. High N accelerates microbial breakdown of labile C, depleting WEOC as microbes mineralize organic matter faster for energy. Lower N limits this “priming effect,” preserving WEOC. A 2019 study in Midwest maize systems showed N fertilization suppressed SOM mineralization by 13-21% at optimal rates but increased overall C turnover at excess levels, leading to 10-15% lower WEOC in high-N plots. This is from papers, our data which is much deeper and has more years to it, shows high N usage has even greater destruction of Weoc than the above papers. I only respond as I think what you shared is good, but it doesn’t tell the story. It only captures the eye of N is good for soil carbon.
