Check out our latest work on Plasmodium with @fidocklab where we explored a novel set of mixed alkyl/aryl phsophonates as tool compounds to identify and probe essential lipid metabolizing serine hydrolases and pathways within the parasite.

Our latest collaboration with @fidocklab is out. PhD student @ChemBio_John found mixed aryl/alkyl phosphonates that target essential serine hydrolases in Plasmodium falciparum. They kill parasites with low overall induced resistance. biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

suggesting a noncatalytic function for BT4193. Overall, we show that gut bacterial serine hydrolases can be drugged, play vital roles in gut physiology, and can (although luckily for diabetic patients not in this case) be potential off-targets that should be investigated! [4/4]

and that BT4193 plays an important role in maintaining envelope integrity and B. theta fitness in synthetic bacterial communities. Interestingly, while BT4193 can be inhibited by FDA-approved DPP4 inhibitors, these phenotypes are not dependent on protease activity, [3/4]
