Some interesting back-of-the-envelope calculations: for every 1 tonne of coal burned a minimum of 3.2 tonnes of CO2 is emitted into the atmosphere. How is that possible? The carbon in the coal has to combine with the oxygen in the air to form CO2. climate.mit.edu/ask-mit/how-ca…
Dr. Dale Leckie@DaleALeckie

Some interesting back-of-the envelope calculations. Newcastle, AU, the biggest coal port on earth, loads ships that carry up to 165,000 tonnes at ~$140/tonne. 6 to 10 ships per day are loaded, generating 55 to 84 billion dollars/year to the Australian economy. Most of the coal is shipped to Japan, Korea, India, and Taiwan. brokenpoplars.ca

I get tired of Albertans who think they are the end all and be all for Canada. Entitled. And whiny I am Canadian first, Albertan 2nd. And want a prov govt who supports their people, not just their small fringe fanbase, cronies, & corporations.

Federal draft rules require oil and gas sector to cut emissions 35% below 2019 levels. Contrary to what @ABDanielleSmith says these new regulations will give producers 4 years to phase in emissions cuts, and they do not limit oil production!! @R_Boissonnault: "This is a cap on emissions. Not a cap on production, full stop. " #Cdnpoli

#Australia is pushing the limits of human habitability in some regions yet again. A fierce #heatwave is forecast to hit this week, with temperatures soaring above 40C in many areas. There's no #monsoon cloud cover as yet, so the north will be one of the hottest places on earth.

@Harry__Faulkner Apparently you didn't pass your civics' test. This is provincial jurisdiction. This is a problem caused by Doug Ford and his government, not Trudeau. The Feds even gave Ford money to help with housing. What is Ford interested in? Selling beer at convenience stores.

This is extremely important, as important as climate change. But any collapse will probably take place in your grandchildren's or great-grandchildren's time and probably isn't as immediate as climate change which is taking place right this second.

1/ I’ve been wondering a bunch of things about a potential AMOC collapse: "When will it tip?" "What are the most likely effects?" "Can we stop it?" So I looked for answers in the many scientific papers published on this. Here’s a super plain language thread with what I found.🧵

This answer and reply to the question, "Why can't you just get over it?" should be played in every school in Canada when the students are learning about Canada's past and the treatment of our First Nations peoples. It should be mandatory for those Home Schooling too.

Tonight, I’m thinking about Justice Murray Sinclair and of the times that I was lucky enough to hear him speak about his work with the TRC. This moment stands out for me. It’s his answer when he was asked, “Why can’t you just get over it?”

Today, Nov 5, is Guy Fawkes Day in the UK. It's also election day in the US. If the Americans come to their senses and elect Kamala Harris as the next President of the United States tonight it will be like the Brits discovering the Gunpowder Plot and arresting the treasoner.

You cannot vote for Trump or the Republican party if you oppose racism, misogyny or economic equality. If you put the value of the unborn over the value of the living you're not a Christian, perhaps a Catholic but not a Christian or 1 who puts faith in the teachings of the Bible

@CraigBaird Thanks for this & all your postings, Craig. I had never heard of Billy Barker before. That's a claim I'm not proud of. There are thousands of people who served their and my country who deserve to be recognized but will no longer be remembered. Unfortunately. Thanks for this.

150 billionaire families have spent $1.9 billion on the 2024 election so far. It's a huge amount of money — but it represents just 0.07% of their overall wealth. It essentially costs them nothing to drown our democracy in cash. We must overturn Citizens United.
