Today marks the start of the #16Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. While we often think of gender-based violence as physical, one of its fastest-growing forms happens entirely online.

Online violence is not “virtual” , it causes real trauma, destroys reputations, silences voices in public life, and drives women out of digital spaces that are essential for education, work, and civic participation.

In 2024–2025: 🔸 85% of women worldwide who have been online have witnessed or experienced digital violence (Economist Impact study) 🔸 1 in 5 girls has left or significantly reduced social media use because of online abuse and harassment

This year’s call to action is clear: We must shift from sympathy to action. Road safety is not just a transport issue but rather it’s a public health, economic, and human rights issue.

Today, we honor the lives lost. We stand with the survivors living with life-long injuries. And we recognize the first responders, health workers, and families who carry the emotional and physical burden long after the crash.
