@shortyyyyy___13 @ilyasleftnipple Getting the chickenpox vaccine helps prevent shingles as well. Seeing as shingles really sucks and can occur over and over for some people, I think even ignoring fatality, it's a good reason

@drterrysimpson This implies lower achievers possess subjective qualities and/or overcame situations higher achievers did not. But their admission is overwhelmingly based on race. Obama - privileged background, private education admitted to Harvard with low SATs & grades

I understand why many Asian families feel frustrated in elite admissions systems. In intensely competitive environments, there is a real perception — and sometimes evidence — that exceptional academic performance still does not guarantee admission. That feeling should not be dismissed. But admissions committees also confront another reality: if you have 100 applicants from privileged, high-performing educational pipelines with nearly identical scores, resumes, research access, tutoring, and opportunities, it is not irrational to also value the applicant who achieved similar academic success despite poverty, instability, underfunded schools, family hardship, or lack of institutional advantages. That is not abandoning merit. It is recognizing that achievement exists in context. And medicine especially is not merely selecting expert test takers. It is selecting future physicians who will care for human beings across every class, culture, language, and circumstance in society. The irony is that many people who defend “objective merit” often become deeply uncomfortable the moment merit is evaluated in anything broader than a percentile ranking.

Wilson's actual stated reason, which is visible in the screenshot he posted, is that “savage” carries colonial connotations in modern English that the ancient Greek ἄγριος simply does not have. ἄγριος means wild, feral, untamed, it applies to animals and storms in Homer. “Savage” in English has a specific post-colonial history. Wilson judged it, correctly imo, as anachronistic. You can disagree with that call. But has nothing to do with non-Whites. That's a made up internal dialogue that never took place. She translates the Cyclopes as “mavericks” which is hardly a whitewash. She used that word due to the their lack of social structure, agriculture, and assemblies, as they live as independent, lawless individuals. Cyclopes' unconventional, solitary way of life, is being contrasted with the civilized, law-abiding societies of humans. Wilson has given us a good translation; not the best but a very decent one. Don't reject it because a non Greek speaking moron told you so.
Roman Helmet Guy@romanhelmetguy

Emily Wilson read the story about a Cyclops eating Odysseus’s men and thought: “Wow, this monster is a non-White person. People might get the idea that non-White people are savage. I better not use the word ‘savage.’ That would reinforce colonialism.”

If you havent read the Iliad or the Odyssey or studied any form of ancient language, your opinion about Emily Wilson's translations matters significantly less to me.

@MaxDemi43573607 @Texas__Bulldog @LitecoinTA @Jebus I think it's more to do with viruses having a "motive" to not kill hosts quickly while bacteria do not, as by definition the former do not have a way to replicate on their own while the latter do

@Rengiyuu_yume @radfemswiftie Plus many tests use a speculum for HPV testing anyway even if it's not a pap and the speculum appears to be what many people are afraid of. I don't think it's a moral failure to not want to be screened. I just don't think it's the ideal situation to be in, if it can be addressed.

@Rengiyuu_yume @radfemswiftie There are! But my understanding is standard STI screening generally does not include HPV. My area is pushing swabs as first-line now which is great, but prior to that, they were relying on paps to catch it. People might think they've been cleared by blood tests when they weren't

why is not getting a pap smear framed as some sort of moral failure, very strange. the only person you’re putting at risk is yourself.

Maybe we don't start advocating against screenings???? You either need to build up some more resilience to tolerate discomfort and mild pain during medical procedures or discuss with your doctor options if you have conditions like vaginismus to make screenings easier for you.
Someone, Somewhere@CapobiaNB

Paps don't test for detecting cervical cancer, they test for cell changes which are common and normal the younger you are. As you age, these cells can show more signs of change, but do not necessarily turn into cancer. Screening helps monitor change, that is all it does.

@GurenVt @dmarieeex @jaileysecrxt This isn't true at all lmao lots of countries use the US framework. I think you forcing your perspective is pretty ignorant tbh. You're just like the people who get mad at Tyla for calling herself coloured.

@dmarieeex @jaileysecrxt Being mexican is not an ethnicity, and children of 1st gen immigrants are already pretty removed from the cultural background. Most countries don't use the US' way of identifying themselves by ancestry, simply by the individual's nationality or ethnic group. It's a US phenomenon.

When I say being raped is expensive, I mean this: I was drugged and assaulted in a frat house at 18 shortly before I was supposed to get my wisdom teeth removed. I had awful PTSD; I couldn’t stomach the idea of being under anesthesia (or even OTC drugs like melatonin or NyQuil).

@yung_coxey @Is_Not_Brian Idk man I think it's fine. That's the beauty of translation - none are perfect and all are inevitably going to have some amount of interpretation. I say this as someone who's literally translated the Aeneid
