Still remember this like it was yesterday. One of the most dominant Orioles pitching performances I’ve ever seen from the start of those dark years… and he later helped bring us Adam Jones! Erik Bedard absolutely DEALT on July 7, 2007: 9 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 15 K!, 27 batters faced, 109 pitches. #Birdland

MLB Tuesday Pick No. 1 ☘️
50 likes for my second MLB pick ❤️
MLB Record: -4.91 U
Tigers vs Braves at 7:15 pm EST
Martin Perez is off to a fast start, pitching to a 2.70 ERA. You know who doesn’t believe in it?
The Braves, and I’m guessing a lot of other MLB teams feel the same way.
The Braves don’t have many options in their rotation, yet they DFA’d Perez.
Every team had the chance to sign him, but no one did. He cleared waivers and re-signed with Atlanta on a minor league deal on April 15th.
In his latest start against the Nationals, he allowed two runs in three innings and was promptly removed. It’s pretty clear there isn’t much trust there, and that makes sense.
His 4.57 SIERA and 4.58 xERA are nearly two runs higher than his actual ERA.
He’s not striking anyone out and is relying heavily on contact. About 60% of that contact is in the air, and he’s sporting a career-worst 24.6% Air Pull Rate, meaning a lot of pulled fly balls, which is a recipe for disaster.
I was a bit skeptical about the Tigers’ ability to hit lefties coming into the year, since most of their best hitters are left-handed. But AJ Hinch knows how to optimize a lineup, and they’ve produced.
The Tigers are a top-five offense against lefties on the road this year, posting a 118 wRC+. This lineup has also seen Perez plenty from his time in the AL Central.
Perez can be effective against unfamiliar teams that get overaggressive, that plays into his hands. That’s not this Tigers lineup. They’re patient and lead the league in walk rate against lefties.
On the other side, we cashed with Casey Mize in his last start against Milwaukee, and while the Braves are obviously a tougher opponent, I trust him.
His splitter has been untouchable, holding opponents to a .114 batting average and a .163 xwOBA. His secondaries are difficult to square up, and he has four of them to mix in, all with an average exit velocity of 87 MPH or lower.
He’s pitching at a high level right now, allowing just two earned runs over his last 18 innings.
The Braves’ offense is obviously elite, a tough matchup for anyone. They have a 116 wRC+ against righties at home, tenth-best in MLB.
Overall, regardless of splits, they carry a 121 wRC+, second-best in baseball. Betting against one of the league’s top teams is always uncomfortable, but when you’re getting plus money with a clear pitching edge, it’s worth a look.
It also should be noted that in this specific spot, the offensive gap is minimal.
The Tigers’ key bullpen arms are all well-rested. With Mize dealing and a fresh bullpen behind him, I think they can contain Atlanta enough to get the win. The Braves’ bullpen is excellent, but if Detroit grabs a lead, we likely won’t see their top arms.
I make the Tigers -113 here, so at +111, this looks like a wrong-team-favored spot.
The Pick: Tigers ML (+111)
