@A2JamieMac Currently co-teaching a seminar at UBC structured very similarly (guests each class, etc.). A lot of work for very little pay is accurate! We are having folks with lived experience in as guests and we’re using our pay to compensate them, so I might be in the hole!

@dougswhite @BCFerries Hey Doug, I’m on the ferry floating around off Duke Pt that can’t dock. Apparently a suspected homicide on board the docked ferry and it’s up to the RCMP to decide whether we can get off and they can take the last run. :( I hope you’re well.

@kwardvancouver @IvaCheung I guess I personally try to have hope, but space to feel that comes from privilege and I sure get why other folks feel differently.

Original draft of this paper written for a seminar on Substance Use Issues in the Law with @jchapnick and @kfmilne. So not really by myself... I had smart people teaching my smart things :)

1st paper I authored and submitted for pub all by myself! See 5th issue under "Placing Theory into Criminal Law Practice" section. I considered how social science research RE social supply could be incorporated into Canadian drug trafficking law. Pls be gentle and validate me.

@garthmullins @AndreaWoo @fumano @loriculbert 14-16k people are certified annually in BC already-we have some of the highest rates in Canada. BC has a culture of relying on involuntary (often traumatizing and/or alienating) treatment as an entry point for services. Time to recognize that it’s part of the problem.

@AndreaWoo @fumano @loriculbert The "influential group" have some pretty odious ideas and provide few details. Are we to imagine 300 people being committed to mandatory treatment under the Metal Health Act? Is that the "stronger hand"?

BC Centre on Substance Use
These acts of racism are why many people don’t or can’t access help. Compound this with stigma around substance use and it’s little wonder many don’t seek out the treatment and care they need, and choose instead to self-medicate

Yikes: Emergency room doctors and nurses allegedly played game guessing the blood alcohol level of mainly Indigenous patients. "Sufficient information to require this investigation."

B.C.'s latest overdose numbers confirm what people have been reporting on the ground: overdose deaths have surged during the #COVID19 pandemic. At least 113 deaths in March - compared to 77 in Jan, 70 in Feb. Last time we had triple digits was March 2019 (117)

We’ve learned from COVID-19 that independent monitoring and oversight is crucial to try to ensure marginalized people don’t experience further inequities during crisis.

One group has been largely absent from advocacy for people at higher risk during the #COVID19 pandemic because of the conditions in which they are forced to live: people detained in psychiatric settings, writes lawyer Kendra Milne. @kfmilne #canpoli policynote.ca/psychiatric-de…
