Sometimes the choice of livestock farming is influenced by culture, but entrepreneurs often choose based on profitability. So, between pigs, cattle, and goats 🐖🐄🐐 …. which one would you choose, and why?

@SamaHoole The history is real, but I am not calling a traditional food bad just because poor people ate it. A lot of the best foods started that way.

Oatmeal was peasant food for a reason. In 18th century Scotland, oats were what you ate when there was nothing else. Cheap. Filling. Storable through winter. The English famously dismissed oats as fit only for "horses and Scotsmen." Dr Johnson's dictionary recorded it directly, and not as a compliment. The Scottish poor ate it three times a day because they had no alternative. The lairds in the same glens ate venison, salmon, beef, mutton, butter, and game. Two diets. Same country. One built bodies. The other kept them alive. Workhouse rations across Britain in the 19th century leaned heavily on porridge for the same reason. It was the cheapest way to keep a body upright on minimal cost. Now it's marketed as a superfood. Wrapped in a sachet. Photographed under a blueberry. Sold with a wellness influencer on the lid. The same gruel the laird's gamekeeper would have considered an insult is positioned as the breakfast of the metabolically optimised. The lairds' diet of beef and game, meanwhile, is dismissed as unhealthy by people who couldn't field-dress a rabbit. They've convinced you that poverty rations are premium nutrition.

I trust food-water debates more when they stop turning water into one big number. Rain in the soil is not the same as irrigation pumped from a stressed aquifer.

@dufitalexis1 Traditional knowledge got this right. I would love to see more hedgerows restored. They support birds, pollinators, soil life, and make farms more resilient too.

Britain has lost around half its hedgerows since the Second World War. The wildlife that depended on them has followed a similar trajectory. 🌿 The old field boundary — a strip of blackthorn, hawthorn, dog rose, and elder two to five metres wide between cultivated ground — was not wasted agricultural space. It was a functioning ecological system that maintained pollinators, pest predators, and farmland birds across centuries of working land. Each hedgerow is a nesting corridor for grey partridge and skylark, a foraging habitat for brown hares and hedgehogs, a site for solitary bee colonies, and a windbreak for the crops alongside it. The field cultivated to its very edge gives the maximum return this season. It removes the populations of beneficial insects, farmland birds, and small mammals on which stable long-term production depended. The field with a hedgerow yields a few percent less per cultivated hectare — but remains productive across decades without compensatory chemical inputs. The documented declines in grey partridge, lapwing, and skylark across the British agricultural landscape since the 1970s are directly linked to field consolidation and hedgerow removal. Practical equivalents for the garden or smallholding: - A strip of wildflower meadow at least one metre wide at the plot boundary - A clump of nettles in a shaded corner as a habitat base for red admiral, small tortoiseshell, and peacock butterflies - A native mixed hedge of blackthorn and hawthorn in place of post-and-wire fencing - A section of uncut grass between rows of fruit trees #HedgerowHabitat #FarmlandWildlife #NativeHedge #GardenWildlife

Nigeria Commodity Exchange
During our strategic engagement in Taraba State, the Nigeria Commodity Exchange (NCX) delegation took a moment to tour the impressive Taraba Greenhouse facility in Jalingo. Seeing modern agricultural technology deployed at this scale is incredibly inspiring. The facility stands as a brilliant testament to how precision farming, climate-smart infrastructure, and modern technology can drastically increase yields, protect crops, and ensure a steady, year-round food supply. At the Exchange, our objectives extend beyond just trading; we are deeply committed to the standardisation, quality preservation, and consistent supply of commodities. #NCX #TarabaState #AgriculturalInfrastructure #EconomicTransformation #CommodityExchange #FoodSecurity #NigeriaForward

Mundani Pixies at 2 years 8 months at MUNDANI FARMS 🌳🍊 The future is extremely bright for farmers. Agriculture is the real goldmine and those planting today are building tomorrow’s wealth. Soon, farmers will not just feed the economy we will drive it. To every farmer out there: keep planting, keep believing and stay patient. The harvest season for agriculture is coming. 💪🏾🌱

UN Food Systems Coordination Hub
What kind of #FoodSystems do we want by 2050? 🎯 Day 3 of #YLPinAction invited participants to think long-term, focusing on the future young leaders want to help build. Through foresight activities and group discussions, young leaders explored the tensions between past, present and future: ⚖️ inequality, 🏛️ fragmented governance, 🌱 climate vulnerability and 👥 exclusion from decision-making. Also, a session with the @World_FoodForum opened space to reflect on how young leaders can remain engaged, connected and influential beyond the lifespan of their cohort. Participants explored practical pathways for continued collaboration, learning and action across global youth programmes and networks. 💡 One idea resonated strongly across the young leaders: meaningful transformation can only happen through sustained participation over time. #FoodSystemsTransformation #YouthLeadershipProgramme

@SamaHoole Exactly. I’d separate rain on pasture from pumped irrigation every time. Lumping both into one big water number is where these debates go off the rails.

Activist: "Beef uses an obscene amount of water. Fifteen thousand litres per kilo." Farmer: "Where did the water come from?" Activist: "What?" Farmer: "The fifteen thousand litres. Where was it before it was on the bill." Activist: "I don't know. A river?" Farmer: "The sky. About ninety-four percent of that figure is rain that fell on the field and got drunk by the grass. The cow ate the grass. The rain was on its way down whether the cow was here or not." Activist: "But it still counts as water used." Farmer: "By the grass. Which would have used it whether I farmed or moved to Spain. The cow isn't commissioning the rainfall. The rain isn't on the cow's payroll." Activist: "Then just don't have the cow." Farmer: "The rain still falls. The grass still drinks it. The water cycles back into the air anyway, just without anyone getting fed in the middle." Activist: "It's not that simple." Farmer: "It's rain, grass, cow, river. Or it's rain, grass, rot, river. Same circle, fewer dinners. Meanwhile every almond in your milk took a gallon of pumped aquifer water in California to grow. That one you might want to worry about. The rain in Wales is doing fine without your concern."
