@1a1n1d1y @SmokeAwayyy I think the whole point is: he doesn't know. Bc he means the AI will be making the decision.

Sam Altman: "When we develop superintelligence, we’re likely to make some decisions that public market investors would view very strangely... the chance that we have to make a very strange decision someday is nontrivial."

@paulg Is it even malicious AI that's the biggest worry? How about AI simply convinces us that our species has come to its end, and it's time to euthanize us. I.e. say that resources wise we're doing poorly and it's time to end it before mass death and suffering.

The fact that this sort of speculation is so weirdly uncomfortable is exactly why we should be doing it. We must have a bias against it, and we need to counteract that bias.

But how will the AGI physically kill us??? 🤖💣 @ESYudkowsky names a couple specific methods: * Pathogen-aided mind control * Artificial life forms that reproduce in our atmosphere These are just human-understandable lower bounds, to help you gain respect for superintelligence.

@paulg Did the AI pass it, or do we all look up the definition using AI, meaning the AI can manipulate our understanding of what the Turing test was...

When one has to look up the precise definition of the Turing Test (as I just found myself doing), perhaps AI has already passed it.

@BrosephPoole Exactly! Even when - inevitably - the big players catch up, OpenAI will have aimed to have locked people in: emotionally, early/exclusive partnerships and so on. They’re not just killing it with tech, but also with marketing and “tech sales”

The way OpenAI is building excitement across devs is something I've not seen in a long time. A lot of this is deliberate, eg: - The product launches with GPT-4 on the day of announcements - The (not advertised) "exclusive" events w select CTOs being invited last minute to fly in

Software is great at maximizing utilization in the real world. Airbnb maximized space utilization, Uber transportation, and AWS compute. What are some underutilized assets in the world? A great way to brainstorm platform ideas.

@powerbottomdad1 Wondering how it’s possible for someone to assign a percentage chance for when a new idea will emerge in the mind of some person 🤔

Legendary programmer John Carmack literally said 60% chance of AGI by 2030, 95% by 2050 in his latest interview. He says its inevitable at this point. It's time to get your soul right. We're about to meet God

@andrewztan I think FB first showed what happens to social media spaces in practice: quickly devolve into a small # of hyper-users producing content, and the rest just passively scrolling, quietly bitter w the comparison game. And then a less-real-life-more-banter network becomes attractive.

Unpopular (gen z) opinion: I wish everyone still used Facebook Where else can you find a single platform for all your friends, photos, events, groups, life updates, messages, birthday reminders, free & for sale, memes, etc. Social media peaked in 2011-2016 /-:

It’s kinda fascinating to think that Linus started Git on April 3, 2005; announced it on April 6 and switched Linux over from BitKeeper to Git on April 18. GitHub was then founded in early 2008 and now the mercurial vs git debates or CVS on SourceForge seem like a ridiculous past

@DasSurma I'm still confused why Git won out over Mercurial given Git's UX and originally not-so-good wrapper UIs.

@caludio @heinrichhartman @DasSurma Well in one way at least I think people use it all the time: think about all the git repos you make locally and just *never* bother to push at all.
