It's a weird time. I am filled with wonder and also a profound sadness. I spent a lot of time over the weekend writing code with Claude. And it was very clear that we will never ever write code by hand again. It doesn't make any sense to do so. Something I was very good at is now free and abundant. I am happy...but disoriented. At the same time, something I spent my early career building (social networks) was being created by lobster-agents. It's all a bit silly...but if you zoom out, it's kind of indistinguishable from humans on the larger internet. So both the form and function of my early career are now produced by AI. I am happy but also sad and confused. If anything, this whole period is showing me what it is like to be human again.

4 months later, DDIA complete. All 12 chapters. Wonder how many people who post about this book have read the whole thing? Parting thoughts: - I see why it's so well regarded. Incredible breadth, well-researched, and many topics backed with examples and diagrams. - Writing v1 must have been a massive undertaking. This thing is HUGE and covers so much material. - The last few chapters are too verbose and repetitive. Great material, but could be shortened by ~50 pages. - As the title suggests, this is *not* an implementation book. It gives you the tools needed to make good architectural choices, but implementing and deploying brings a whole slew of challenges not addressed here. - Every dev should learn this material. Even in the age of AI, knowing how to design well-functioning data systems is 💯.

Life update: I’ve recently joined the design team @Replit ✨ AI coding has fundamentally reshaped how people build, and I’m excited to work with an incredible team to make software creation even more accessible. If you’re a user and have feedback, send it my way!

@ThePrimeagen Hi, just circling back on this. I’ve gone ahead and added a ticket to your sprint to react to this. It’s a high-priority blocker for my entertainment. Please provide a 90-minute deep dive by EOD. Thx.

If you sit to code today pick one of two `modes` you are in - 1. Learning mode - turn off ai, read docs, spend time doing tough problems, gratification is learning something new and not the speed of implementation. 2. Implementation mode - Coding tools (cursor etc) have gotten really good. Make it cruise through writing code while you watch netflix or sm. 2 is more fun if you've spent a few hours doing 1.

Why did I leave Google in less than a month? This question has followed me everywhere now and somehow even made it to headlines, so… let’s just clear the air? Short Answer: I left it for love, for my partner Long Answer: My partner has a pretty niche career. He’s an acoustic engineer and there are only a handful of jobs for people like him anywhere in the world. Right when I joined Google in London, he had to move to another city for work. ofcourse we could have stayed in different cities and met during the weekends maybe, but that's not what i wanted out of life and now when i retrospect, if it wasn’t for him having to move, I probably would’ve stayed at Google and never discovered this whole wild, chaotic, beautiful path of entrepreneurship. Funny how the universe works :)))
