Police in Mpumalanga have intensified operations against illegal mining in Pilgrim’s Rest and surrounding areas, leading to multiple arrests during May 2026. Police arrested several undocumented foreign nationals in Pilgrim’s Rest, Elandshoek Ngodwane, Kwabokeni, Majaks Village and Sudwala on charges linked to possession of gold-bearing material and equipment, contravention of the Immigration Act, illegal explosives, and unlicensed firearms. Among those arrested was 50-year-old Thulani Nonyane, who faces charges under the Explosives Act and Firearms Control Act after police allegedly found blasting cartridges, a rifle, a pistol and ammunition in his possession. A 65-year-old suspect was also arrested in Mankele, Sudwala, for possession of an unlicensed firearm. Police seized firearms, ammunition, explosives, suspected gold-bearing materials, mining equipment and chemicals believed to be used in illegal mining activities. All suspects are expected to appear in various local magistrates’ courts, while detectives and the Department of Home Affairs continue verifying the legal status of the undocumented suspects.
