I also want to improve my spoken/dialect Arabic as well, but I’m too scared to speak bc I’m gonna make a fool of myself and get flamed when I inevitably get things wrong or don’t know a word 🙃

It’s weird trying to learn & improve my Arabic given I grew up learning and speaking it to some level. I understand it well but rn I struggle to express ideas, my vocab is rly limited, and my grammar sucks. It’s an awk position and idk where to start/focus to become fluent

@loco_latakian in practice fusha can be treated as another language. Most ppl dont speak it natively and have to learn it thru school. let alone someone who didnt grow up in the blad. Its not exactly the latin-romance lang anology bc it never died out but its still not native in that sense

I learned fusha growing up so I have a base in it and spoken Arabic I can understand rly well, it’s more so I don’t have the confidence to speak or write at length.

Ok I’m lwk prob much better off than I made it sound here it’s more just that I’m not fluent and can’t express certain complex or abstract ideas and I sometimes blank on vocab My Arabic is rly solid all things considered esp compared to most other second-gen Arabs tbh

@loco_latakian this is why non arabs make a lot better students than arabs a lot of the time, since theyre a blank slate and assume they know nothing. If you take this attitude though, you will ASCEND to the top. otherwise most arabs dont care and dont properly learn

@loco_latakian its ok bro all us children of immigrants have this insecurity about our arabic lol. We all have to start somewhere. You dont know nothing, but there are "gaps" other areas maybe. but you actually are a lot better off than other arabs who think they know but they actually dont

@loco_latakian you will still have an advantage bc of ur knowledge of whatever arabic you have, ammiya/fusha vocab, language structure, any grammar etc. But just let that be a boost and dont rely on it, still put in work also, childrens books unironically is helpful for everyone

@loco_latakian honestly if you want to do it properly without having potential gaps its to start from zero. However it also depends what ur goal is. When it comes to grammar in like sarf/nahw i would recommend that to even arabs, esp 1st gen. (goal is understanding quran/hadith presumably)

@loco_latakian unfortunately, this is the only way to learn. not being afraid of getting fun of i mean. Bc that happens to every learner and the main thing blocking advancement is specifically this fear. You have to get used to embarassment. In reality many more ppl are nice than mean,

Since working I miss academia ngl, I miss writing essays, critiquing and defending ideas (I have a Philosophy background). I wish there was a space for Muslim academia, or people doing academic work that take entries, or want people's thoughts/ideas on things 😭
