Sloths are known for their incredibly slow pace, but during mating season they reveal a surprisingly loud and energetic side. Once a month, female three-fingered sloths enter a seven-day estrus period during which their activity levels increase by an astonishing 200%. To advertise their readiness, they climb to the top of a tree and emit loud, shrill, bird-like whistles. These calls start sporadically but quickly intensify, eventually occurring every 10 to 15 minutes. The female continues screaming until a male finally locates her through the dense canopy and climbs up to mate. While three-fingered sloths rely on powerful vocal signals, their two-fingered relatives take a quieter, chemical approach. Two-fingered sloths do not vocalize during mating. Instead, females secrete pheromones from specialized glands and deliberately rub them onto branches, creating a scent trail that guides males through the trees. Researchers have also observed that females in heat may descend to the forest floor each day. This unusual behavior is thought to be a strategic move: by leaving pheromone-rich waste at the base of trees, they broadcast their reproductive status to any males moving through the area below.
