I honestly just find the Hawks' Magic City promotion baffling. These teams will be like come out for Harry the Hawk's birthday, where he'll play games with all his mascot friends! Then bring your game ticket to the strip club for a BOGO lap dance voucher

I grew up with the MJ/Kobe/Tiger generation where the top players were the alpha dog psychos. Now it seems like the top players are a lot more ambivalent about winning as the end-all-be-all (Liu, Jokic, Scheffler). When everyone's intense, maybe the edge is playing free

Rookie free agency works in sports where there’s still reason to care even if your team has no hope of ever competing for titles. Soccer has relegation/lower leagues, college sports have school loyalty and local rivalries. Permanent Underclass in the NBA would not be fun

There are real-world examples of this. It’s good in some ways and bad in others. But sometime in the last 15 years every sports writer started to write everything as if they were the president of the players’ union for some reason, so we can’t acknowledge trade-offs

@nathanclemente7 I think it’s mostly lazy thinking combined with the 2010s aversion to being criticized for being insufficiently player-friendly tbh. But they also have a Dr. Manhattan aloofness from particular teams, which gives them a weird perspective on the fan experience
