Should Muslims Greet Christians on Christmas?
An Islamic Perspective
Islam strongly encourages good character, kindness, and peaceful coexistence with people of other faiths. The Qur’an says:
> “Allah does not forbid you from being kind and just to those who do not fight you because of religion…” (Qur’an 60:8)
There is no clear verse in the Qur’an or authentic Sunnah that expressly forbids Muslims from greeting Christians during their festivities.
Respected Islamic scholars, including Imaam Nuhu Bashar (Missioner, Nadwat-ul-Ahli Global Assembly, Ogijo Branch, and PhD candidate in Islamic Studies) and Imaam Sulaiman Bada, Standing Imaam, Nadwat-ul-Ahli Global Assembly headquarters(PhD in view in Islamic Studies), have both affirmed that saying greetings like “Merry Christmas” is a social courtesy, not an act of worship. It does not mean accepting Christian beliefs or compromising Islamic faith.
Imaam Kamaldeen Abdulkareem, Missioner Nadwat-ul-Ahli Global Assembly, Oto-Ijanikin branch also agrees that extending warm greetings is permissible. However, he cautions that Muslims should not turn it into something to campaign or argue about. Islam allows kindness without confusion and tolerance without compromise.
Regarding food, Muslims may eat food shared during Christmas as long as it is not among what Allaah has made haram, such as alcohol or unlawful meat. (Imaam AbdulHakeem Lawal, Chief National Missioner, Ikhwaan-ul-Muslimeen)
In Summary, greeting Christians on Christmas is not prohibited in Islam,it does not equal endorsing Christian beliefs,it promotes peace, mutual respect, and good neighbourliness. However, Muslims must still maintain their Islamic identity and beliefs.
Consequently, I personally agree with this balanced view. Islam teaches wisdom, mercy, and good conduct, especially in multi-religious societies like ours.
Kindness is not disbelief. Courtesy is not compromise.
