SIX CHARGED IN MAJOR D.C.-AREA AUTO THEFT RING; STOLEN VEHICLES SHIPPED AS FAR AS AFRICA WASHINGTON, D.C. — Federal authorities have unsealed a 15-count indictment charging six individuals in connection with a large-scale auto theft conspiracy that operated throughout the D.C. region and beyond. According to investigators, the group allegedly stole at least 20 vehicles across the Washington metropolitan area and Pennsylvania, then transported and sold those vehicles both within the United States and overseas, including to buyers in Ghana. The indictment follows a year-long investigation into what officials describe as a sophisticated and organized theft ring. Authorities say the operation may be connected to a much larger number of cases, including more than 100 vehicle thefts in Washington, D.C., and over 30 in Prince George’s County, Maryland. As part of the investigation, law enforcement executed a search warrant at an automobile storage facility in Decatur, Georgia, believed to be tied to the ring. According to court documents, members of the conspiracy used electronic devices to reprogram vehicles, allowing them to start cars using blank key fobs. Investigators say the suspects would then alter the vehicles by swapping license plates, obscuring Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs), and disabling GPS and Bluetooth systems to avoid detection. The stolen vehicles were often stored at various locations, including a parking garage in Southeast D.C., before being transported and sold. The group primarily targeted newer model Honda Civics and CRVs, as well as Acura TLXs and RDXs. Those charged in the indictment include Jacob Hernandez, 29, of Los Angeles; Dustin Wetzel, 23, of Woodbridge, Virginia; James Young, 23, of Hyattsville, Maryland; Khobe David, 24, of Upper Marlboro, Maryland; and Chance Clark, 25, of Waldorf, Maryland. Officials say one additional suspect remains at large and is considered a fugitive, with that portion of the indictment remaining sealed. All individuals named are charged with conspiracy to possess, transport, and sell stolen motor vehicles. The case is being investigated by the Metropolitan Police Department, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia, the FBI Washington Field Office, and the Prince George’s County Police Department. Authorities say the investigation remains ongoing as they continue working to dismantle the broader network tied to the theft ring.
