Of Lionel Messi's eight Ballon d'Ors win, I can tell you that three to four of his awards were not deserving • 2010 • 2019 • 2021 I am indifferent of 2012 and 2023 wins to an extent For Ronaldo • 2013 I am also indifferent of his 2014 win to an extent You can call it an agenda.... I will give you a breakdown Someone made a comment on my post yesterday and said Lionel Messi has enjoyed corruption in the game pointing to the 2010 Ballon d'Or win I said, both Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi have benefited from it and I pointed to the 2013 Ronaldo Ballon d'Or win but I included a caveat 'It started with Messi' The FIFA World Cup was rated so high that it automatically determines who wins the FIFA Player of the Year Award and the Ballon d'Or And in the year when there is no FIFA World Cup, the Champions League and other factors can come into play It could sometimes swerve though but the Champions League became a major factor for the Ballon d'Or in the 2006/2007 season The FIFA Player of the Year award started in 1991 and the first winner was Lother Mathaus He was the captain of the German national team that had just won the 1990 FIFA World Cup and he won the Ballon d'Or too In 1994, Romario of Brazil won the FIFA Award but didn't win the Ballon d'Or because it was meant for European players alone So, Hristo Stoichov of Bulgaria won it. He had a great tournament. • Bulgaria was fourth • He was joint top scorer • Third best player After 1994, Ballon d'Or organizers turned it to a global award and in 1995, George Weah became the first non-European to win it In 1998, Zinedine Zidane after winning the World Cup with France won the FIFA Award and Ballon d'Or • Ronaldo Delima won both awards in 2002 • Fabio Cannavaro won both awards in 2006 Both players won the FIFA World Cup Until 2010!!! When the unbelievable happened Wesley Sneijder had a stunning year with Inter Milan and the Netherlands. • Won a treble with Inter Milan • 2010 FIFA World Cup Silver Ball • 2010 FIFA World Cup Bronze Boot But he wasn't even nominated Lionel Messi had gone to the World Cup and had no impact but to the surprise of many, he won the FIFA Ballon d'Or It was arguably the biggest robbery of any award the world has ever seen Not even Andres Iniesta and Xavi Hernandez were deemed fit to win it despite winning the FIFA World Cup in 2010 And that was when the corruption started Cristiano Ronaldo won both awards despite crashing out of the group stage in 2014 The world cup was also neglected In 2018, Modric won both awards because of he won the Golden Ball at the World Cup and Croatia finished as runners up In 2019, Messi won the award ahead of Virgil Van Dijk who had won the Champions League and was the best player in the competition In 2021, Messi won the Copa Del Rey and won the Ballon d'Or In his defense, people said he won the Copa America, that is why he won the Ballon d'Or Jorginho won the Champions League and the Euros, he came third In 2023, Messi won the Ballon d'Or over Haaland. I might not even have issues with that You see the hypocrisy that is wrapped around Messi's career I always give him credit for his incredible talent and achievements in the game but the favouritism that shielded his career is enormous

My visibility is nowhere near that of the bigger accounts, which is why I occasionally boost my posts. If you want to challenge narratives and highlight uncomfortable truths, sometimes you have to be willing to pay a price. Now let me ask a simple question. Can a player score 0 goals at the World Cup, fail to win the Champions League, and still be crowned the best player in the world? In 2010, the answer was yes. Historically, Ballon d’Or winners were heavily influenced by success in the Champions League and major international tournaments. In a World Cup year, performances on football’s biggest stage usually carried enormous weight. Lionel Messi won the 2010 Ballon d’Or after scoring no goals at the World Cup. While Barcelona won La Liga, they were eliminated in the Champions League semi-finals by Inter Milan. Messi failing to score against 10 man Inter Milan for over 50 minutes at the Camp Nou. Meanwhile, Wesley Sneijder produced a year that seemed tailor-made for Ballon d’Or recognition. He won the Serie A title, Coppa Italia and Champions League with Inter Milan, led the Champions League in assists with 6, then scored 5 goals at the World Cup while helping the Netherlands reach the final. Diego Milito scored both goals in the Champions League final and was decisive throughout Inter’s treble-winning season. Andrés Iniesta scored the winning goal in the World Cup final. Most observers expected the award to go to one of those players. Instead, it went to Messi. The justification was individual brilliance. For many fans, however, 2010 felt like a shift in the criteria. Success in the biggest competitions appeared to matter less than it had for previous winners. That feeling did not disappear. In 2023, Erling Haaland won the treble with Manchester City, broke the Premier League scoring record and finished as the Champions League top scorer. Yet many suddenly argued that goals and trophies were not enough. This is why some fans believe the criteria often changes when Messi is involved. In 2010, trophies and major tournament performances seemed secondary to individual brilliance. In 2023, Haaland’s goals and trophies were downplayed. Today, goals are once again being heavily emphasized because Messi is scoring; there has been no talk on assists/pre assists at the on going World Cup. Whether you agree or disagree, 2010 remains one of the most controversial Ballon d’Or decisions ever. It is the year many began questioning whether the standards were being applied consistently. As José Mourinho once said: “If I have to win it this way, I would be ashamed.”

@Biblet_Quinn @kingrio6102 @RayToluAyo La Liga and the Supercopa? A Supercopa with 3 goals is the achievement you’re shouting? 😂 Sneijder won Serie A, the Coppa Italia, the Champions League, the Supercoppa, and the Club World Cup. He also led his country to the World Cup final and finished as a joint-top scorer. Ahh.

@kingrio6102 @RayToluAyo Okay, let's say Ribery deserves Ballon d'Or that year he won treble. Why shouldn't Alvarez win Ballon d'Or 2022? was part of the Treble winning Man City team and also won the World Cup. Judging by the logic of trophies.

@kingrio6102 @RayToluAyo I’m not. I was trying to make you see that even with the fact that Ronaldo didn’t win a trophy that season he was good that season and he also deserved it. It is an individual award. Individually he was fantastic.

@tobiclemson @RayToluAyo You’re conflicting yourself. World cup is also a team success for whoever you decided to put against Messi, either Sniedjer, or Iniesta because Messi had more goal contributions than them. In all the awards Messi won, he has never gone trophyless…

@tobiclemson @RayToluAyo Modric scored 2, didn’t win it. My point is, you used goal contribution for Ronaldo in 2013 but couldn’t use the same metric for Messi in 2018? And the 2013 win would feature a player winning it without winning any trophy whatsoever

@kingrio6102 @RayToluAyo It was a World Cup year, and Messi was knocked out in the Round of 16 with just one goal contribution. Modrić led a small country like Croatia to the World Cup final and won the Golden Ball. He also won the Champions League that year. Griezman World Cup final with 4 goals.

@tobiclemson @RayToluAyo The year Modric won it, Messi had the highest goal contribution of all the contenders but came 5th. Care to explain the reason?

@RayToluAyo They keep bringing up 2013. We can argue that one, but Messi has 4 Ballon d’Ors that he didn’t deserve. In 2013, Ribéry scored 1 goal in the Champions League, while Ronaldo scored 12. In the league, Ribéry had about 10/14 goals, while Ronaldo scored 34 goals. Ronaldo —World Cup

If not for FIFA President, Messi should have long retired from football. Imagine getting a Balon d’or in 2010 without scoring a single goal in the world cup.

The difference between Messi and Ronaldo is that when Ronaldo scores, the world talks about Ronaldo; wen Ronaldo doesn't score, the world still talks about Ronaldo; wen Messi doesn't score, the world talks about Ronaldo; wen Messi scores, the world continues to talk about Ronaldo

Yes the year he won his 2nd consecutive Ballon D’or. Sneijder won the UCL and made the World Cup final but he was snubbed. Iniesta won the World Cup with Spain and was Messi’s teammate but he was sidelined as well. Barca didn’t even make the UCL Final. If you compare the 2010 and 2022 Ballon D’or standards, you would be extremely confused. I love Messi’s style of play but I would be a fool to not see how much he has been favored his whole career. 😂😂😂
Blaize ™@Furious_red_

Wait, both Messi and Ronaldo have played in 6 world cup tournaments but only Ronaldo has scored in all of them, does that mean Messi went an entire world cup campaign without a goal?
