England is a land of castles.
From ruined hilltop keeps to great stone fortresses, they stand as reminders of the people who built this country across more than a thousand years of history.
They deserve not only to be remembered, but preserved.
At the Kingsflame Festival, we honour that inheritance.

Herne the Hunter is said to haunt the forests of Windsor, a horned figure who rides through the trees at night terrorising cattle, his presence marked by the rattle of chains.
Over the centuries, these tales are passed on and gather new meaning, but they only survive if we continue to tell them.
At the Kingsflame, we will tell these stories again.

The Kingsflame festival is a celebration of over a thousand years of English history.
We’ll be honouring our Celtic, Saxon, Norman and Medieval roots through storytelling, traditional crafts, the clash of steel, and enchanting performances that keep these traditions alive.
And at the centre of it all stands the Kingsflame, an 8 metre tall pyre commemorating the 1100th anniversary of the founding of England, and the ancient fire that still burns in the English spirit.

Tradition is not the worship of ashes, but the preservation of fire.
Fire has been central throughout human history, for warmth, cooking, and toolmaking.
But it also carries spiritual significance. Fire has long marked celebration and renewal and we intend to continue that tradition. During the Celtic festival of Samhain, communities would extinguish their fires, before building a new central fire, lit by the local king, from which every household would relight their own.
So we too will relight the Kingsflame, an 8 metre tall pyre celebrating the 1100th anniversary of Æthelstan reuniting England and becoming the first King of a united England.
