In an internet poll it's easy to signal virtue with no consequences, and it was still rather close. I imagine at least 80% will vote red when the threat of death is immediate in reality.

A train is coming down a track. Everyone on Earth has the choice to either tie themselves to the track, or not. If more than 50% of people choose to tie themselves to the track, the train turns around and doesn't run them over. Yes or no - do you tie yourself to the track?

Your quality of life in a post-red win is not at all guaranteed. Are you self-sufficient enough to make that your only criteria for the vote?

100% population has a choice and can choose to live. The russian roulette choice is optional, and a game most won't play. If death were really on the line I would have thought through it for longer and figured this out. So would most others. The quality of life afterwards will fall where it will and may be hard, but unless I'm suicidal I don't see it as a dilemma.

Tipping a simple majority in the direction with no downside is significantly more viable.
