Here's where this goes... Firstly, kiss successful insurance claims goodbye. Any accident will be blamed on "sub-optimal driver performance", and that time your hands moved briefly from the 10-and-2 or your eyeline wasn't correctly picked up by the mirror sensor will be used to blame your fender-bender on you. Secondly, there will be a big "people drive dangerously" propaganda push. "ADDW data harvesting has shown up 80% of us might be driving more recklessly than we think", or "most veteran drivers slip in to bad habits, reports show". Then comes the new legislation to act on this totally fabricated problem. What is it? Oh, it's re-certification. Every driver has to be re-certified after X years on the road. Or maybe your driver monitoring data will be uploaded to a database and scanned for errors. Those errors put points on your license and if you go over a certain number of points, your ability to drive is taken away pending recertification. You can appeal, and drive while the appeal takes place. But the appeal fee is greater than the recertification fee, and if you lose, you have to pay legal costs, and you're not allowed to drive for double the usual amount of time. You'll have to pay a "processing" fee for re-certifying, of course, and if you fail, you'll have to wait X amount of months before you can try again. Headlines will celebrate both the (fictional) decrease in traffic fatalities and that the smaller number of private vehicles on the road has improved the pollution levels in the inner cities. An opinion piece from an anonymous "former driver" will appear in the Guardian "I lost my drivers license, and it's the best thing that ever happened to me". It will talk up how much money they're saving on petrol and road tax, and how much fitter they get walking everywhere and how they know their neighbours so well now. And all sorts of cosy anecdotes about the charming characters and life-affirming tableaux that public transport exposes you to.

Schizophrenia.. He believes the answer is some combination of biochemistry and neural network-level problems that AI can untangle.. And here's the line that stopped me.. Human lifespan.. Doubled.. To 150 years.. He points out that life expectancy already doubled in the 20th century.. From 40 to 75.. So doubling it again is "on trend".. Drugs already exist that increase maximum lifespan in rats by 25 to 50%.. Some turtles already live 200 years.. We're clearly not at a biological ceiling.. He calls this the "compressed 21st century".. The idea that AI gives us 100 years of biological progress in 5 to 10 years.. But he doesn't stop at health.. He thinks AI could drive 20% annual GDP growth in the developing world.. Bringing sub-Saharan Africa to China's current GDP per capita within a decade.. He thinks AI could eradicate malaria not through treating millions of people individually.. But by releasing modified mosquitoes that block the disease at the source.. One centralized action instead of a million.. He thinks AI could make democracy structurally stronger.. Not through propaganda.. But by giving every citizen an AI that knows every law they're entitled to.. Every benefit they qualify for.. Every right they have.. And helps them actually access it.. He imagines AI that monitors judicial systems for bias.. AI that helps find common ground between opposing political views.. AI that makes government services actually work the way they're supposed to.. And he addresses the question everyone asks.. What happens to meaning when AI can do everything.. His answer.. Most people aren't the best in the world at anything right now.. And it doesn't bother them.. Meaning comes from relationships and connection.. Not economic productivity.. People will still pursue difficult challenges.. Still compete.. Still create.. The fact that an AI could theoretically do it better won't matter any more than it matters that someone somewhere is already better than you at every hobby you have.. But here's what makes this essay different from every other AI optimism piece.. Dario Amodei runs one of the three most powerful AI companies on earth.. He has a PhD in computational neuroscience.. He personally worked on mass spectrometry and neural probes.. He's not a pundit.. He's a scientist who happens to be a CEO.. And the same man who publicly says there's a 25% chance AI causes human extinction.. Is also saying that if we get it right.. We cure nearly every disease.. Double human lifespan.. Zuckerberg wants to manufacture the feeling without the physics. A feeling stripped of friction has a different name. It is called a simulation. Zuckerberg: “Glasses are going to be the ideal form factor… they can let them see what you see and hear what you hear.” The previous era of technology captured what you typed. What you clicked. What you purchased. All of it after the fact. All of it voluntary. This captures what you see before you decide what it means. Zuckerberg: “It has to have context and understand what’s going on in your life, both kind of at a global level and like what’s physically happening around you right now.” He is not describing a search engine. I've been angry since covid lockdowns. I'm angry that they shut down small businesses and some of those ended up going bankrupt. I'm angry they forced us to wear masks and made people act like circus monkeys. I'm angry that they convinced people that walking one way down a grocery store aisle would somehow save them. I'm angry that the gaslit people into taking a poisonous "vaccine." I'm angry that they convinced people to turn in their neighbors for having too many people over at thanksgiving. I'm angry that our country has never returned to the same serenity that we once had. I'm angry what has happened to our medical care system. I'm angry that nobody has been arrested for crime against humanity. I'm angry that they forced people to take a vaccine that they didn't want to take or they lost their jobs.
