@EM203AlexSeguin Local policies to increase housing development (lower development charges, flexible zoning, etc.) would help, but have tended to be politically unpopular. People want more housing supply, but would prefer it be somewhere else. 3/3.

@EM203AlexSeguin The recent rise in housing prices is linked to increased demand (mostly population increase) and very low investment rates in residential housing. In the long-run, housing prices will fall if residential housing supply increases to match (or exceed) population increases. 2/n.

@kjacksonatwlu The housing market in Canada continues to rise with the cost of living, what steps can be taken by policiy makers to try to reduce this issue? #EM203Robin

@EM203_Kevin Primary cause is an increase in demand due to population increase and a large reduction in interest rates (mortgage rates going from around 8% to 3%), combined with restricted supply due to local building restrictions.

@kjacksonatwlu I have a quick question for you. Housing prices soared over 355% between 2000 and 2021, while median nominal income increased by only 113%. Why do you think this is the case?
