@GergelyOrosz @udemy is also having issues. Though not a major service as such.

Outside of Coinbase, did any other major service have a 8-hour outage? I’ll be honest: did not notice anything else. Want to make sure I didn’t miss anything? (AWS had an outage in a single AZ. This should have… NOT taken down any service with resiliency 101)

Kubernetes Services give Pods a stable address. But there’s a hidden question most people never ask: HOW does traffic actually reach the correct Pod? This is where kube-proxy enters the story 🧵 When you create a Service in Kubernetes: kind: Service name: user-service Kubernetes gives it: ✅ A stable ClusterIP ✅ A DNS name Example: user-service → 10.96.0.10 But here’s the catch, That IP does NOT belong to a real Pod. There is no container actually listening on 10.96.0.10. So how does it work? This is kube-proxy’s job. kube-proxy is the traffic forwarding engine of Kubernetes. It runs on EVERY node in the cluster. Its responsibility is simple: “Whenever traffic comes to a Service IP, forward it to one of the actual Pods.” But kube-proxy does NOT proxy traffic like Nginx, it mainly programs networking rules into the Linux kernel. Usually using iptables or IPVS. Think of kube-proxy as a “rule manager”. Not a traditional proxy server. Here’s what happens behind the scenes: 1. Service is created 2. kube-proxy notices it 3. kube-proxy creates iptables/IPVS rules 4. Linux kernel starts forwarding traffic automatically Imagine this request: Client Pod ↓ user-service (10.96.0.10) Linux checks the iptables/IPVS rules created by kube-proxy. Those rules say: “Forward this request to one of these Pods” Example: 10.0.0.1 10.0.0.2 10.0.0.3 And this is dynamic. If a Pod dies: ❌ Remove old Pod IP If a new Pod appears: ✅ Add new Pod IP kube-proxy continuously watches the cluster state. Modern Kubernetes can use different kube-proxy modes: 1. iptables mode 2. IPVS mode 3. eBPF replacements (like Cilium) --- iptables: * simpler * very common * rule-based packet forwarding IPVS: * more scalable * optimized load balancing * better performance at scale --- And now the industry is moving toward: 👉 eBPF Where tools like Cilium can replace kube-proxy entirely. Why? Because eBPF is: * faster * more programmable * kernel-native If you remember one thing: 👉 Service gives stable discovery 👉 kube-proxy makes the routing actually happen Without kube-proxy, ClusterIP would just be a fake IP nobody could reach. Kubernetes networking starts making sense when you realize: Services are abstractions. kube-proxy turns those abstractions into real packet routing. x.com/_jaydeepkarale…
