I was slow and clumsy, but the bottling trial run is done, and the first labeled bottle is made! #FullFat @NYFarmer

I have several retired cows that like to be combed. It’s tough spreading the love around without getting them jealous.

@LisaM1449169 You probably didn’t grow up with cows. I don’t meet too many farm kids with allergies

@kmcsween @91PoorFarmer2 We just got done re-splinting. We used heavy sock and cut the toe end out and slipped it over the leg. That seemed to work pretty good. Otherwise the splint wanted to twist with the leg. Thanks for your input.

Anyone have experience with a calf like this? Front leg are bent back and to the side. Massive calf. Assuming it got cramped in womb and things had to bend to make room. Fixes? Or is it goodbye time. Born about 48 hours ago.

That works perfect. Just make sure to have a good amount of wrap and cotton under it so it doesn’t rub any sores. Also round any sharp edges on the pvc and tape it to make it soft. It’s critical to go all the way past the carpus (the “knee”), otherwise you’re not taking the pressure off the flexor tendons. That calf doesn’t look that severe. It should be fine. If you can get it to touch its “toes” consistently, that’s all you need.

@kmcsween I love that they are 'retired' and not off to slaughter.

@casinobonusguy no, not really. sometimes if you’re hand feeding them they can take a hard bite. But they don’t have a top row of incisors, so they can’t bite like a horse or human.

This afternoon I dropped open cows off at the sale barn. I turned and looked at them one last time. She stood patiently looking at me "Now what Mom"? My heart broke, I bit my bottom lip as hard as I could to not cry in front of the sale barn worker.  She was more than just a cow.  She was born February 4th 2014 at 9pm to a first calf heifer #21. #21 was a calm, patient heifer. Her little heifer calf was struggling to latch and it was COLD! Putting momma in the head gate was not an option, I got in and grabbed the calf and prayed I would get the shit kicked out of me. I got the calf to latch and soon momma was licking me to the point she licked my stocking cap off. She was always calm and quiet. As a calf she would walk up and I could boop her nose. Boop #421 stayed on as a replacement heifer. She never missed a calving season, until this year 2025. She blessed me with two sets of twins. Boop calved 5 bull calves and 6 heifer calves. I only kept one daughter out of her and she is currently bred with her second calf. #121 is lovingly called Feedlot (she's fat year around).  Boop was the confidence cow. She trusted me and I trusted her. I could walk the herd anywhere with her at my side. I could call "come on girls" and she always came.  She was more than just a cow.  She's been a part of my life for 11 years, 1 month and 21 days.

Turned Helen and her calf, Ans (short for Johanna), in with the main herd. I usually give them 3 days alone to bond strongly. I’ve got some cows with strong maternal instincts that love to steal calves away from a timid mother.

@oldfarmgirlkah She’s the calf that was born a couple days ago. We call her Ans. It was a full on blizzard about 2 am this morning. Wait 5 minutes and the weather will change!
